View Full Version : Bad Eyesight

I have REALLLLLLYYYYY bad eyesight and I just hate wearing glasses because I feel like I look like an idiot in them. It sucks because they look good on a lot of people, but it changes the way I look too much :/. Anyway, how bad is it for my eyes to not wear them and to keep straining them? My doctor said I have astigmatism, which I guess is when your eyes are missshaped or have dents in them or something? But I don't know. Sometimes they REALLY hurt, like around where the bones of my eye sockets are, like they're pushing up against the bone or something.
Sorry for writing so much, but my list goes on.
I get soooo many of the floaty thingies, and when I'm in the VERY dark place, I see these speckles of "light" i guess you could call it? It looks like when a screen goes fuzzy with those colored dots on a tv I don't know if anyone knows what I'm talking about lmao.
Anyway, I've read up about Retinal Deterioration and I have more than one of the symptoms. What I've read about it is that your eyesight gets worse and worse (which it has been :( ) and then at one point your eye will detach from the optic nerve or something like that and you go completely blind. This scares the shit out of me.
Also my doctor won't let me get contacts because I won't let them put them in for me. I would be able to do it just fine myself, but having someone else do it for me is just impossible for some reason.
EDIT: OH! And by the way, can rubbing your eyes a lot, HARD, make your vision worse? I rub my eyes becase of how much they feel strained and tired, and how sore they guy from what I explained above how they push against the top it feels like.

I know what you mean. My dioptic measure is about -8.5 so I'm pretty helpless without my glasses or contacts. Though luckily they should only get slightly worse. To answer you questions:
1. Straining your eyes in the way you describe won't damage them. However trying to see in the dark is bad because you tend keep your eyes open for too long-therefore damaging them.
2. Yes, I'm sure many of us (me included) see those speckles in the dark
3. Relax dude! Don't think you have retinal deterioration just because your eyes are getting worse. Rather trust a diagnosis from your optometrist. They should stop getting worse after puberty wears off.
4. Well then get contacts. Just put them on yourself. Or just get used to wearing glasses. Fuck what others think.
5. Don't rub your eyes too hard-that can't be good for your eyes.
Finally, perhaps consider laser surgery after your eyes have stopped changing. Expensive, but then you won't have to deal with this crap. Ever again.

I get those floaty thingies, and don't think rubbing your eyes is a good idea honestly.
I know how you feel about your glasses: I've been hearing-impaired since I was 4 and there's a HUGE stigma attached to people who wear hearing aids, but unless you can learn how to cope without them I guess you're just stuck wearing them.
Sorry :(

I didn't wear my glasses when I was about 8 for about 4 years and nothing got much worse or better. Got to 12 and starting wearing them full time now my eyes are even more shit than they used to be so I honestly don't know. My eyes hurt and I get headaches when I don't wear my glasses for a while so it could be that?

Yup, I used to think there was something wrong with me about that but I think I just see them more than others. Sometimes it completely clouds my vision.

Not that I know anything of it but I would trust the professionals. They know what they're talking about . if you're worried about it maybe bring it up with them?

Yeah, when I got contacts for the first time it literally took her over 40 times to get it in but it seems they need to. If you want them then It's compulsary for them to put it in when you're at the opticians but afterwards it's all down to you.

I rub my eyes a lot. I don't think it can make you're vision worse, just makes them sore and hurts and that deffinitly isn't good for your eyes.
Like Teejay said though, if it's that bad for you then maybe think about laser eye when you're older.

Thanks everyone, but I don't care what OTHER people think, it's just that I don't like the way it looks myself lol. I want contacts soo bad but it's legit impossible for someone else to it them in for me unless they use the numbing agent. Hmmmmm

It might hurt or sting the first time they put something into your eye but you just have to keep really still and open your eyes really wide and move your eyes around so it sticks to your eyes. You can't get anything to numb it so I wouldn't count on that and it is only one time. When you first get glasses they will look pretty stupid, same with everyone. As you get new frames and people get used to them they look fine and suit you. When I come into school wearing contacts people don't even notice so it really wont matter.

Well I wear them during school if I really have to but never out of school. When I went to the doctors though, they put numbing eyedrops into my eye to see if it would help and it did, but they said that I can't do it myself until they do it without the eyedrops

Well I wear mine all the time at school and when and never when Im home but I suppose that's okay if you're long sighted. I have never heard of numbing drops, when I went to the hospital they did put drops in my eyes to dilute them to see my pupil better I think it was for (I had like 4 drops because my fucking eyes are so dark lol). Well really, if you want these contacts then you just need to let them put it in because when you do it yourself your eyes will be dry like in the morning and that's worse.
