after the 'mixed reviews' of my last website, I have decided to focus on aesthetics more.

It's actually a better idea to focus on content first and design second. It's like wrapping a present -- you won't get very far if you wrap it first and try to insert a present later.

Provided you fill up that very colourful space that currently has nothing in it, I see great potential...what's it going to be about?

If it looks nice but the content is bad, that won't get you anywhere, like Thomas said.
I'd make the buttons a little smaller spell everything right, and utilize space, not too cluttered, and it'll look pretty good.

Looks a bit unoriginal, if you ask me. I have seen that background photo / style of background photo too much, and it's overused.
It is true, you should focus more on what you're going to have on the site. It's a bit like those youtube tutorials with 2-minute intros and then a really shitty 30 second clip with bad quality sound. No, just no.
