Hi
Last night I completely lost it, yada you know the rest, and cut. I cut rather deep and I was extremely anxious last night, if I'd done something bad. I know I didn't hit a blood vessel. I'm just worried, is there a real reason for me to be concerned? (Medically, that is.)
It's about a half a centimeter deep, about 5 centimeters long and gaping... about half a centimeter, I guess (I'm estimating all of these).

medically? not really. Most of my cuts are like this. Cosmetically yes there is something to worry about, look at the cut. where you see the skin (or fat tissue) underneath, the gaping part, its gonna be bright red skin there once it heals. i suppose it turns white eventually. but the scar left will look exactly like the cut. so no, just keep it clean. very very clean otherwise you may be prone to an infection, and those are nasty. alcohol and peroxide 2x a day, i know it stings. you'll be okay :)

I know that this has a lot to do with self-harm, but I think you could get some really helpful responses in the VT General Hospital about this since you're looking for medical tips.

Yeah buddy if its what you are describing it needs to be looked at by a Doc and may need strips/suturing/glue to close. It may also need cleaning to prevent infection, and depending on the cause a Tetanus shot my be required (really important if your not vaccinated).

Im only going to say this bit because docs/medics/nurses in my country (including me in my training) are told this, so I am only going by my area. We do not use alcohol/peroxide on open wounds. We don't as research suggests that it delays healing, can leave scars and kills bad and GOOD cells which bacteria can then feed on. Use simple salty water. Don't shoot me down people that's what we down here.

Thanks, um, Robert actually suggested me to talk to you about this, pretty much because we're, both in Australia. Thanks for the advice, also.

I could not have said it any better but you NEED TO GO TO THE HOSPITAL...
