‘Fight for the right.’ That’s what my father always told me, than he ran into the battlefield and got slaughter by the undead army. From that day on I have sworn my vengeance on all the undead. I have the power to do it as well, seeing I am King Xavier III slayer of shadows, torch in the night. I hold the my titles proudly and am going to prove them right if it’s the last thing I do. “SIRE, IT’S TIME!” shouted my chief advisor Naomi her red hair seeming to light up complementing the brilliant blaze of her green almost feline eyes on her otherwise very slender body but there was no doubt she could beat any person in my army in a fair fight. “Yes it so very is VENI VIDI VICI” as I called out our battle cry which translates from Latin “I came, I saw, I conquered”.
II
5 Years earlier.
“SIRE, your father just fell to the undead but also managed to destroy there entire invasion force.” Naomi told me in a very grave tone.
“DAMN THEM ALL!” I shouted with so much so vigor and volume the birds feasting on the dead carcasses scattered into the surrounding forest. “Damn them.” I repeated sadly. “You” I said pointing to a young officer who looked startled to see the new king speak to him “I need you to go fetch Father Caylb for me tell him it’s an emergency.”
“Yes Sir!” he said saluting and ran off.
“So Sire looks like you are now the King of our mighty nation of Chetner.” Naomi said matter-of-factly.
All I could do was nod my head as I viciously fought to keep back the tears.
At that moment Father Caylb showed up in his usual black gowns he wore and made an entrance of saying “SIR!” and giving a nice little bow.
“Hello Father I need you to make me a binding vow.” I said coolly despite my heart being in my throat.
“BUT SIR!? If you break the vow you will be utterly destroyed on the spot.” The priest said completely taken off guard.
“I know, I know.” I said somberly “but I will die trying so if I fail I will die anyway.”
“Okay if you are sure sir give me one hour to prepare.”
III
When night fell on this seemingly endless day the father was ready with the rituals. There were candles laid out in the symbolic pattern of a circle with a triangle inside. The circle represents the cycle of life and the triangle shows the three things the mighty kingdom believes must be in all their warriors, courage, strength and the most important thing loyalty.
“All behold and be witness to this ceremony of a binding vow.” The priest said in a loud speaker voice with the candle light reveling his, old, clean shaven, wrinkled face with light blue eyes, it is nearly impossible to tell his size with the flowing gown he wore but he was a pretty tall person yet everything about him had an air of calmness. The crowd broke into cheers but seeing the very few survivors (500) there weren’t very many spectators. The old priest waited for the cheering to die down than continued. “King Xavier please step into the triangle” he said putting extra emphases on king.
I did just that a little cautiously wondering what I got myself into but at the same time knowing there was no turning back now. The priest waited just a little bit longer and did a ritual dance that look suspiciously like ‘the chicken dance’ but the intent was obviously to call forth the gods and if it weren’t obvious the priest started an incarnation of “the mighty gods we call you forward to witness this binding vow, Welvery, god of fire, with the body of a serpent, Timu, god of water, with the body of a merperson, Levant, god of earth, with the body of a bear, Gobell, god of air, with the body of a griffin. AND of course the mightiest god Khila, god of all, with the body of our king.” He repeated this five signs until each god gave there unique sign they were present, Welvery lit an offering of wood on fire, Timu made it rain, Levant made a pitiful earthquake to ensure no damage was done, Gobell made a mighty gust of wind and Khila gave a mighty clap of thunder.
“Thank you god’s now Xavier it’s your turn to do some work. I first need to know what your vow is.” The priest said still in a loud stage voice.
“I want to avenge my father’s death and wreck havoc on the undead!” I yelled with all my fury.
“Well that’s very joyful, now repeat after me, ‘I solemnly swear I’m up to doing good’.” I repeated it. “I King Xavier the third vow vengeance on all these undead forces.” Again I repeated but a lot louder than the priest. “To slaughter there forces and banish them to Alcatraz (their version of Hell) for once and for all” I screamed this line at the top of my lungs.
“There ya go King Xavier the Third you are now part of this vow.” And with that the priest left his job was complete.

“Sire our forces are being bolstered quite nicely” Naomi said 3 months latter in the battle room. The room itself is quite nice and spacious though that effect is ruined by all the maps, battle reports and intelligence sheets spread across the floor and the long oaken table in the middle of the room. The room also had our battle banners spread all across the walls it had a blue circle with the red triangle in it along with the serpent, bear, merperson and griffin on it but seeing the kings always changing they could not put it on but it worked out as the 4 animals were in each corner, serpent top left, bear top right, merperson bottom right, griffin bottom left and had the triangle inside the circle in the middle.
“Yes the forces are coming along nicely what are our precise numbers right now?” I asked.
“We currently have twenty thousand trained with another fifteen thousand in training Sire.” Naomi responded coolly
“Okay can u please go fetch Scott for me?” I asked politely as I always do with Naomi doesn’t do to get on the bad side of someone like her.
“Of course Sire will be back in a few minutes.” And with that she left the room leaving me to think things over.
Within the last three months I have been busy preparing for the war though preparations will take a lot more time. I redid our training process so now we only teach one soldier one type of warfare so it’s quicker, I did a call for volunteers and hired a bunch of new officers as most were killed in the battle with the undead. I also have changed as now that I’m focusing so much more on our military I have been a lot more lenient on common folk and they seem to be enjoying that. Our blacksmiths also have been kicked into hyper drive making all the weaponry they can.
“Sire” Naomi’s polite declaration knocked me out of my reprieve.
“Hello Sir” Scott said with a bow. His jet black hair slicked back and he wore a leather tunic and leather chaps which marked him as a scout to be precise he is the head of intelligence. Every thing about him radiated happiness and power he filled a room despite his short height but his mere enthusiasm made up for it.
“Scott can you inform us as to the current numbers of the undead?”
“This is not the best time to be asking as pitifully few of our scouts are actually making it back but at the moment we have estimated one hundred thousand.” Scott said diplomatically
“ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND!?” I repeated a lot less diplomatically.
“Well that’s conservative there could be more we can’t get to close to them” Scott said never losing his cool.
“Your kidding right this is some sort of joke.”
“I’m afraid I am quite serious”
“Wow ok that all you may be dismissed”
And with a bow Scott left the room.
V “Naomi how are we suppose to fight one hundred thousand troops probably even more when with ours in training and battle ready are only thirty-five thousand!?” I asked failing miserably at keeping the panic out of my voice.
“Permission to speak out of turn?” Naomi asked
“You do know you’re my advisor your suppose to give me your honest and true opinion.” I said knowing what was coming must be terrible if she had to ask.
“Well sire I have absolutely no idea.” Somehow she actually said this sentence completely calmly.
“Well this is not good at all than. If we decide to wait they could continue to grow for all we know but if we attack it is almost certain slaughter.” I said after slowly counting to ten to regain my composure.
“Sir let us wait for a little bit say like 3 months so we can gauge their speed of getting troops as those were not all trained with in this time span as you have to remember they only sent a single invasion force to us not actually their whole army as obviously that would be just plain idiotic to leave your country completely defenseless and they don’t seem to be that stupid if I may say so myself.”
“See; see I don’t see why you didn’t say that in the first place instead of panicking all around panicking is my job it’s the whole point I have advisors so if I do panic it doesn’t mean certain death for all of us.”
“Ya sire it may be best NOT to tell the rest of the civilians that as I think it would cause some pretty major issues.”
“Yes because I was certainly planning on going to all of the people and screaming with terror at the prospect of having to fight this war.” I said with a pretty big sarcastic bite.
“Ya trust me I would never put something like that behind you.”
“Don’t forget who lets u reside in this kingdom.”
“Didn’t you just say it was my job to give you my honest opinion?”
I paused for a second to think about this than responded “Okay point proven now I remember why I keep you on my side and not as an enemy.”
“You always do remember in the end.”
“Don’t push it too far.”
“Sorry sire I would lie though if I said it probably will never happen again.”
“Don’t worry I have realized that by now.”
“I feel so noticed.” She said absolutely beaming
At this point I got up and just made the simple message of “I have a war to prepare for” and left the room.
