View Full Version : I cut; but only because it looks good.

I'm just scrolling through my checklist and ticking off questions I've been meaning to ask.
For about a year now, I've cut myself with my craft knife because I like the look of the scar it leaves. I don't have any mental illnesses and i don't suffer from depression, I just like the way scars look, especially when I flex my muscle.
Is this a problem?
Should I refrain from doing it?
Is it just a phase?
(Most importantly) Does anyone else feel this way?

I certainly wouldn't recommend or endorse you doing this. I doubt it'll lead to cutting out of depression, anger etc... but I just think that safety is an issue. If you make one wrong move, something horribly wrong could happen. Also, how will they look in 20-30 years? Would you want them? And it can, like Nikki said, eventually become an addiction, and you do not want that.
So in short, this is a bad idea. I would try to stop.

You might think it looks good now and like it but think about your future? Would you be so happy about them then?
If you can stop and even if you can't I urge you to try to quit now. There are so many dangers with cutting and infections, people judge and make fun which could hurt and even if they new the truth that doesn't usually stop them. It isn't a phase, I dont think you can have phases of cutting? But like I said please try to stop now before things get to hard and you get addicted because even if you're not doing it for the sane reason as the rest of us addiction can still be a possibility.

You should refrain from it. I can somewhat see why you'd like the look of it but it's a bad thing and should try to stop.

hey, i think that if you self harm there is always a reason behind the self harming, that you might not even relialise is the case. if its more than just once i would go and get help from doctor, or teacher, could be a symptom of a mental illness.

I'm just posting to re enforce the posts mentioned above. Cutting yourself shouldn't be done for cosmetic reasons. And surely there ust have been something that made you cut in the first place to leave that scar in the begining, for you to KNOW that they would look good? Be careful mate, you can't keep doing this. Sooner or later you'll realise that those scars might mean something figuratively, as well as physically.
I would stop. It probably is a phase. I haven't felt like you, but I have cut myself in the past, and thank god every single scar except one has gone.

Actually, it can kill you to cut. Any sort of self harm can lead to death, accidental or not, especially cutting.
I don't recommend you keep this up. Destroying your skin in such a way as scars purposely is not a good idea. Try tattoos instead (Something I took up doing a year ago). They are ten times better looking.
I often times find myself mystified by my scars, there are dozens of them all over my arms stomach and legs, and I love how they look, but only because they remind me of a lot of tough times I've gotten through. There's a difference. Either way, self-harm is self-harm. Don't do it for any reason.
Move onto a better way of decoration.

I think you need to try an stop. It might look good now (in your opinion), but when you want to be taken seriously at job interviews etc, you won't want them, because they hint at mental illness. Stop before you become addicted :)

cutting isnt a good thing at all, and personally, thinking that you do it for 'looks' is quiet disrespectful to people that genuinely have problems and do it as a 'stress relief' not because it looks good.

I dont think its "disrespectful" that thats his reason for doing it, thats like saying opiate addics are disrespectdul for taking oxys when other people use them cause there in physical pain. just my opinion sorry if i sound rude...

It may go away soon. But you really shouldn't have done that.

Yeah, don't cut yourself, period. As many other people said you could get seriously injured, and it's not some sort of fad either. Also, just think about how your friends would react when they see your scars, and how other people would react as well. Most would probably assume you've been cutting, especially if it's on your wrist.

All I can say is I can totally relate to this. I've held my straightener on my thigh because I liked the colors my skin turned the few weeks after.
It is a psychological issue, just a different one than in most cases.

I think its very interesting that you post this, because I honestly thought I was the only. When I first started cutting, it was because of anger and depression. That was about 3 years ago. But now I find myself self harming because I'm amused with the way it looks. I find pleasure in watching it bleed and seeing the scar it leaves. Its gotten to the point where I'll just sit in my room all day slicing my arm with a piece of glass. I've also been punching walls because I LOVE seeing my knuckles bruise and swell up. Thank you for your post and good luck to you!
