Install Vista or 7 with a CLEAN DISC, and during installation, you'll want to delete partition that comes up, and install Vista or 7 onto that free space OR create a primary partition. If your computer came with a Windows 7/Vista CD and/or The Windows 7/Vista Registration key on a genuine sticker underneath the laptop, then you will be legally allowed to download an image version of the operating system, since you already have a license for it.
If anything with your hard drive fails, it may mean your hard drive is corrupt. Oh, and make sure that if your computer uses a SATA hard drive, make it run in ATA mode, NOT AHCI, as ATA is a for WIndows Vista or 7. Good luck,
