Try to talk more often in person than you do over text or Facebook. If you both can, and want to, you could to video calls rather than just typing to each other to make conversation a bit more fluent. This is a growing problem, people are becoming more and more comfortable with talking online, and when it comes to in-person conversation, things can get kind of awkward and silent. Just try to spend more time with her in person and things will get less awkward. It doesn't always have to be really deep conversation, small talk has never killed anybody before :P

facebook isn't real enough for relationships. you should chat with her more in person definitely.

Talk to her more, have a couple of jokes or small talk topics up your sleeve: if she likes celeb gossip (god forbid :P) then talk about... whoever's hot right now. If she's a metalhead, then first of all congratulations and second talk about what bands are on tour and when they plan on visiting your town, etc.

Mike's right, nothing will progress until you can find a way to be comfortable with each other on and off the computer. Just spend more time together, get to know each other because as you say things are different when you have someone next to you and on the other side of a screen.

Face to face conversation is a skill to be developed just like any other. Practicing is the only thing you can really do. I suggest you just try not to let it get too quiet. Keep conversation going, make her laugh, talk about her/your day, ect... Hopefully since she's your girlfriend you have enough in common to have a fluent conversation.
