When people like your responses, they credit you with the rep button. To be honest, rep is completely overrated bullshit anyway. You don't need it to have a good standing with people.

Post well and constructively, then people are likely to add reputation to your posts.

If people like your posts, they'll click on the little scales icon at the bottom of your user info thingy, and add rep. Depending on who gives you rep, different amounts of it will be added.

Rep is only others' opinion of your posts. Nobody will judge you based on that(hopefully), as it is merely a number and some blocks.
If it bothers you, you can hide it here (http://www.virtualteen.org/forums/profile.php?do=editoptions#cb_showreputation).
Read this (http://www.virtualteen.org/forums/faq.php?faq=vb3_user_profile#faq_vb3_reputation) to learn all about rep.

Rep really doesn't say anything about you, and in my opinion is the worst addition they paid for on this site.

People will click the little scale button at the bottom of your post if they like what you posted. Truth be told, though, rep's pretty useless. There's no advantage to having lots, and no disadvantage to not having any, or having bad rep. So don't worry about it. :D

I don't understand why there is negative rep, could be abused if someone does not like what you say. I think negatives should be for staff only.
