as if things can't get stupid enough...

Christian college warns student for ‘coming out’ on Facebook (http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2012/03/12/christian-college-threatens-to-kick-out-student-for-coming-out-on-facebook/)

A college student who announced on Facebook that she was a lesbian could be kicked out of on-campus dorms if she doesn’t remove the posting from the Internet, according to Fox 2 News.

Kiah Zabel, a 19-year-old student at Rochester College in Michigan, posted an image on the social networking site that read: “Out…Proud…Lesbian.”

Shortly afterward, the Dean of Students sent Zabel a letter asking her to take down the image or face expulsion from campus living.

“I appreciate your move towards honesty and being the real you, but I’m going to have to insist that you change your Facebook banner picture,” Brian Cole wrote in the letter obtained by FOX 2 “‘Out…Proud…Lesbian’ is not really consistent with the heritage of Rochester College and has proven to already be disruptive among fellow students who are really bothered by it.”

School officials have told her that she must keep her sexual orientation a secret.

But Zabel said she shouldn’t be punished for being honest.

“Christians are supposed to love others and they love themselves,” she said. “Why am I being punished for being who I am?”

not sure why she went to a Christian college in the first place, but that doesn't matter. What she said at the very end, she is SO right.

and how students are "bothered" by it?? Unless she does something inappropriate towards girls or whatever, they have no need to be BOTHERED.

ugh >_>

What the fuck. My school did that to people when they banned yoga pants because people were saying bad things about the school. they shouldnt be able to do that. You should be able to do what you want with out the school getting involved.

I'll never like Christians with this mind set. Their religion says that God forgives and accepts everyone, yet they go against their own people. A lot of people need a wake up call.

Just waiting for some extreme left wing organization to call for this school to be defunded immediately and closed down.

this is ridiculous, I want to hop on a plane and go personally beat up Brian Cole.
Just because it's a private school doesn't mean that they can piss on her human rights.

Wow, this made me laugh just from the sheer stupidity. Religious or not, the school should not have the right to do that. She should be free to go to any school and post whatever she likes on FB. FB is not related to the school in any way. If anyone has an issue with it, unfriend her, simple.

The thing is that the school does have the right to do that, since it's a private institution. Yes, what they're doing is stupid, homophobic, ignorant, backwards and disgusting, but they certainly have the right to be all of those things if they want to. Free speech goes two ways, you know.

She did the right thing by publicizing this issue, maybe it'll convince the college otherwise. However, it wouldn't be fair to take away the right of the college to take in or kick out whoever they want, for any reason, which is what some people are suggesting.

yep. ya know, it REALLY pisses me off when people say "christians"

it offends me that you would say this, because i am very VERY accepting. i guess i just think it is kind of hypocritical for you to say that people must accept each other and then judge like that. FALSE JUDGEMENT, THERE.

anywho.. this isn't right.especially if she already is paying all this money, and then she has to do everything they say?

I am not saying what the college did was right BUT SEEING as none of you are of age to attend a US College you would not understand that...What THEY say goes, you may be paying for the education but what they say goes and they can saw whatever they want...your money does not matter, there is some other student who wants in, they will kick you an pit them in......

Anyone who makes a comment on this sort of topic such as religion is stupid, I hate Christians because they're so intolerant or I'm an Atheist because of things like this you have the complete wrong idea.

Even this comment makes my blood boil;

Really Christians. Keep the bigotry and hate going. It's almost entertaining.

The problem is that this is NOT how religion or Christianity works. This is called extremism. Fred Phelps is the father of Christian extremism but that's NOT how normal Christians think.

Real Christianity is about being tolerant towards others, loving each other and treating others how you want to be treated.

Extremism brings all this sort of thing crashing to the ground. It's almost stereotypical in a way. Religious extremism is terrible because many people perceive it to be how everyone in the region thinks.

I'm a Christian myself and I can say that I certainly don't go around holding up a 'God hates fags' sign and yelling at people who are homosexual. I don't go around acting as if Christianity is a force of hatred and intolerance, refusing to accept others as equals just because they don't do as the bible says.

This sort of thing even boils down to Islamic extremism. One of the major extremist stereotypes of Islam is that everyone's a terrorist. I can tell you right now that this isn't the case.

As I said before it even becomes stereotypical, leading more and more people to believe the lie. Are all citizens of the USA fat? Do they ride around on Harley Davidsons and go to rodeo's every weekend for their entertainment? No. Do all Australian's ride around on kangaroos in the middle of the outback saying g'day mate to everyone within a radius of five kilometres? No.

Stereotyping and extremism go hand in hand and this is very, very bad for everyone. As soon as we all get the big picture we can all live in harmony without hate, bigotry or intolerance.

Sorry if this seems like I'm ranting. I just want everyone to know what's right.

All colleges have the right to do this, same with private schools. If the general population of the school is offended then the Dean has to do it, or else he will get many complaints from families. There was sothong on Anderson about people writing stuff on FB and whether their workplace should interfere.

But it's freedom of speech saying what you believe no one should get in the way of that. If people got offended of her saying that on FB just delete her, don't go and tell the school they need to be adults about it. The Dean did ask her in a respectful way, but I disagree how they got involved in something that's personal, it's not like she's going around her school flirting with other women and posting pics of her doing obscene things to women. I think Christians should try to help her instead of persecuting her.

But at my old Christian school, if a parent found something offensive and enough parents complained about it the school would recognize the issue and deal with it. Any university or college would do that if enough parents complained.

It does, Christian Colleges have different standards to uphold too, they have a different core curriculum and parts of it are met differently at Christian Colleges rather than Traditional Colleges...

Here is the Undergraduate Admissions from the Rochester College website and I have bolded a few specific terms...
At Rochester College students are part of a Christian academic community where their minds and spirits are called to meet exciting challenges through daily interactions with professors who have been educated at some of the finest institutions in the world.

The challenging academic programs strive to educate the whole person, stressing instruction in literature, history, mathematics, great ideas, religious studies, natural and social sciences, and human communication.

What makes academics at Rochester College truly special is our dedication to integrate faith and learning. Students journey together with our highly qualified faculty to understand and carefully study all that the arts and sciences have to offer while placing that information within the context of our Christian faith and practice.
Seeing as this is a Christian College it is most likely private and that means it is not receiving any federal funding which means the college can make any decision that is wants to, the college reserves the right to do whatever it likes...it can and will, that is how the system works, hands down.

Many of you are all too young to know how a real college system works, as I stated earlier you are at their desecration, you have no say, just because you pay them does not mean anything....they can find someone else who will take your spot that they can get the same amount of money from or more. You are just a number to them.

Except you're implying that all Christians have read the entire Bible and base all their values on that. It's an unfair assumption to make in saying that a Christian bases his/her values entirely from the Bible. Seriously, this is just another way for extreme leftists to act out and say Christians are all about hate and bigotry.

Thank you so much for this post.

ALSO, people assuming that every Christian is a gay hating, anti abortion speaking, whatever else hating person, they are just as bad as the people WHO really are like this. I am christian, and I don't even really know my sexuality, nor does it really matter in the end. I am pro choice for everything, AND, I really don't mind anything or any other religion. So, please, stop assuming the worst.

Never once did I say all christians are like this. I said that the values and rules of the bible match the ideologies of a racist, homophobic, slavery supporting, person. You can't argue about something I didn't say, and you can't argue a fact either.

This is insane. I cannot believe that nothing has been done to the school in retaliation to this. Wouldn't the parents want to have something done? Unless the parents don't support her coming out, then that would really suck. I hope they do, and I also hope that my parents and my friends and my school would treat me the same if my sexual orientation changed. I wish this girl luck, and hope that she does something about this unjust, complete racism. Because sexual orientations are races too, you know?

Some of it, yes. That's where your argument went off course. If you had said that some of the Bible matches the ideologies of a homophobic, racist, slave owner, etc., then I would agree. However, by saying the values and rules of the Bible match is wrong because you're implying all the values and rules of the Bible reflect a homophobic or racist agenda.

I think it's a bad idea to come out on popular sites like Facebook, I think it should be something you only talk about with friends
