So i heard this thing called "manic depression". I think it's when you get these mood swings of a depressive state and a joyful state, when one second you can feel your lowest, and the next your at an all-time high. (metaphorically of course).
it usually lasts a day or so in-between swings) I'm just wondering why. I get it every now and then for no reason. Sometimes when it's really bad I cut too. I just wanna know if theres any answers.
I'm a really bouyant and outgoing person, and love all my friends, but every now and again this sort of thing happens, disappointment in myself, making it worse by cutting. I just want it to stop really, without parents getting involved. (my mum has enough to deal with without my unusual troubles)
If anyone has any ideas, I'd really appreciate it.

Sounds like bi-polar disorder, if you think that you're a manic depressive. If you do have this, then you will need medication. Many teenagers have moodswings, so they tend not to like to diagnose them with it, but this sounds to an extreme level. The best thing to do, is find help in someone, anyone, before you seriously hurt yourself. Good luck

manic depression is what bipolar used to be called. political correctness thought it sounded a bit mean so they changed it. bipolar when you break it down means two opposites i guess. 6 months ago i told my therapist that i felt kind of like you do now but i didnt have an "inbetween" mood it was just from one end to the other and the periods lasted longer. i think there are 4 types of bipolar and they range from things like having one "manic" episode in a year to having multiple. my doctor said i might have this and put me forward for assessments. that was moths ago and im still no further forward.
my advice is to tell your doctor exactly how it is straight away and maybe you will get sorted before it gets worse. dont wait around like i did!
good luck man.

well, manic depression is the old name. It's now called bipolar but it doesn't work like that. When you have bipolar each manic (joyful state) or depression lasts for approximately 3 months. If there are more than four cycles within a given year then it's rapid cycling bipolar. It sounds like you just have mood swings, and maybe should talk to a doctor.

I am no expert on this topic, but here's what I found.
Mood episodes last a week or two—sometimes longer. During an episode, the symptoms last every day for most of the day.
Children and teens having a manic episode may:
Feel very happy or act silly in a way that's unusual
Have a very short temper
Talk really fast about a lot of different things
Have trouble sleeping but not feel tired
Have trouble staying focused
Talk and think about sex more often
Do risky things.
Children and teens having a depressive episode may:
Feel very sad
Complain about pain a lot, like stomachaches and headaches
Sleep too little or too much
Feel guilty and worthless
Eat too little or too much
Have little energy and no interest in fun activities
Think about death or suicide.
So, is it possible? Yes. But remember, none of us are doctors here. If you are truly worried, than I would try speaking with someone. Maybe start with a counselor at your school, and they can refer you to the appropriate professional. Or, you could go straight to your doctor, whatever you're more comfortable with.
But remember, don't always assume the worst. You may just be very moody; it is hard to tell without an expert opinion.
So good luck, and we're always here to help.
