So guys, I wanted to know your opinions on how the media shows cutting, especially in movies and music videos (like P!nk's "Perfect" and Green Day's "Jesus of Suburbia") Since I'm only one person, I was hoping for a more general consensus: is it accurate/inaccurate? does it help improve understanding or reinforce misconceptions?

Not much went into depth, but the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) did something (http://www.abc.net.au/news/2011-11-26/20112511---pontville-self-harm-incident/3696784) in a program, about self-harm and suicide, more into depth about illegal immigrants self harming, attempting suicide, why they're doing it, and what's being done about it.
What was said in the full program, was fairly accurate, actually.
ABC RadioNational also covered something, and has a 'lifematters' page dedicated to self harm (http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/lifematters/self-harm/3845402).

I came across this (http://www.virtualteen.org/forums/showthread.php?t=112631) thread ages ago (keep in mind for anyone that posting in it would be a bumped thread :P). I ended up watching 'Painful Secrets', which was fairly accurate in my opinion.
It really depends, honestly. It depends on the person watching it, and the people who made it.

I find it funny that I actually think art and the media in general portrays self-harm very well actually. I've never seen it done badly. All the films and tv shows I've seen that involve self-harm never show it in a derogatory manner. I said it's funny because despite that the general public thinks it's so taboo and fucked up.
Jenny in The L Word and the film Thirteen are really the only ones I can think of right now.

I think that pinks perfect music video was very touching. i have never hurt myself to that extent with that much blood, so i feel that really does show how upset she really was.

Some magazines have irritated me, like the teen ones I used to read. Their problem pages would have self harm letters and they'd have a model in emo clothing with a knife looking meaningfully at his/her wrist. On tv too I often find that it's inaccurate and there's these news articles that claims only emos or 'alternative' genres self harm. I remember the Daily Mail blaming bands like MCR. Mass media tend to generalize it in my opinion, as do magazines. The generalization that everyone dressing in emo fashion self harms is the worst media issue I've come across. It really seems like every few months it crops back up again.
