Don't know anything about pocket camera's. I've got a Nikon D5000, for under 300$ there's not that much competition. Get something with a good lens, good megapixel quality, and a reputable brand (Nikon, Canon, etc.).

My family owns one of these and I'd say it is pretty swell ---> http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-SX130IS-Stabilized-3-0-Inch/dp/B003ZSHNG8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1330667973&sr=8-1

It's been out for awhile, but I've still seen them in stores... there's also a newer model (SX150IS). Great little camera without breaking the bank.

Not to mention, most Powershots are near indestructible. I had one for eight years that was brilliant and only died when smoke started coming out of the flash when it went off.

But yes, most cameras under $300 are good and there's not much competition. Don't worry about megapixels, they mean nothing unless you want to be printing the image or making it absolutely huge on your computer or something. A lot of people assume a higher number of megapixels is a better camera and that's not true.

I own one SX130IS. I have to say that it's a really good camera. You'll definitely learn to take some good photos with it. The image quality that it has is just outstanding. I would call this camera more like a pro compact camera rather than just a simple compact.
And the zoom that it has is just outstanding (for the most of the cameras out there.)
The new model doesn't have many new stuff on it except the full HD video if I'm correct...
I would say to got for it.
One also good camera is the Nikon S6200. It's more or less like the SX130 but it's more lightweight, the zoom is x10 and not x12 and it has (or her I don't know anyway :P) sharper focus.
