View Full Version : Do you feel like nothing has a meaning?

I've always been interested with philosophy and facts... I'm atheist and I only believe what is possible and can be proven.
Do you ever think life is pointless?
Because at the end of the day we're all just a big clump of cells and tissue which just by a phenomenon of nature we can move and live... I don't even believe in consciousness, as far as I'm concerned consciousness is chemical reactions in my brain :P
just wanted to get things of my chest because if you talk about this anywhere else people think you're suicidal or a psychopath :P

Everyone has an impact on something at some point each day, whether big and meaningful or small and irrelevant. Everything you do has a point and the actions we take can influence the whole of the future.
So no, life isn't pointless even though it can often feel that way.

And I think that's a huge problem within our society. People view it as depressing instead of liberating.

Personally I believe at the end of the day it's just how you enjoy life. Nothing more.

This is a really great thing that he posted. This is 100% agreeable.

“Every atom in your body came from a star that exploded. And, the atoms in your left hand probably came from a different star than your right hand. It really is the most poetic thing I know about physics: You are all stardust. You couldn’t be here if stars hadn’t exploded, because the elements - the carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, iron, all the things that matter for evolution and for life - weren’t created at the beginning of time. They were created in the nuclear furnaces of stars, and the only way for them to get into your body is if those stars were kind enough to explode. So, forget Jesus. The stars died so that you could be here today.”

I believe life is pointless but that doesn't mean we can't give it our own meaning. I'm not a person who thinks there's a reason for everything, I like to view life as a simple construct, as exactly what I can examine it to be with my brain and senses. Pretty much the reason why I can't be theistic. I don't think we really mean much. None of this will probably amount to anything in the scheme of things. We're just another stepping stone in the progression of whatever this will become. And continue to become, as the universe is ever expanding. The worth we like to put into our race I find is stupid. Sure, we're superior in evolution than all other current animals but we're nothing compared to the Earth, the galaxy, the universe. We're just tools. But since we're here, why not make the most of it, regardless of if there's actually a point to it all.

Of course not, we're human beings, it's in our nature to give value to things. A mug that my mum gives me and asks me to take care of right before she dies doesn't mean any more than a new mug I buy from the store.

Again, what the hell do I know. I know nothing, I am nobody. I'm just a cosmic view behind the windows waiting for the cold touch of something exogenous.

This is more of a debate.

You assign that mug meaning though. There's no point to anything if you view everything from an objective/non-human point of view, and that's just pretty damn impractical.

This. I mean if we weren't here, the earth and everything on it then there would be nothing, absolutely nothing, so anything we do we are doing for us, so there really isn't any point or meaning to anything that we do. But thats just my opinion.

I completely agree with this. So what if you are just a bunch of chemical reactions in a lump of matter? You can still live a fulfilling, albeit purposeless, life. And you could always do something to improve the lives of others who don't share your somewhat depressing philosophy.

Being a Christian, I think life has a meaning; it is made by God. However, that doesn't answer how God came into existence, His meaning of HIS life.

OP didn't ask for opinions regarding the creation of life. He asked about the meaning. "God made it" is not a purpose. "God made it because <insert opinion here>" is a purpose.

just cos you don't have meaning doesn't mean you have to be like oh look at me and my point of view i'm human may i shake your hand wtf

This.
Yet somehow, religion is so deeply engrained in me that I won't attempt suicide for fear of becoming a Dybbuk or going to the 7th circle of hell.
Stupid, I know.

Honestly, in my opinion the purpose of life is to further the human race. Some people do this by making scientific or medical break-throughs, other's further the human race in the simplest way possible: Mating. One more generation could create a favorable genetic mutation that would launch us into the space age.

I believe life has meaning only if you take in to context that there is something greater. If there is no God and we are only a pile of cells and atoms, why do we have objective moral values? Why do we find pleasures and invent pleasures? How come we, as humans, make up irrational fears that other animals, or lumps of cells, do not ever imagine? The fact that humans are so different from just being a lump of cells is because something greater designed a purpose. Now what that exact purpose is, I believe it was to have the ultimate relationship with God through Christ Jesus, so that God, Himself, could be glorified, and that we can marvel and experience the love of God.

I believe it has no meaning if you don't want a meaning. I personally think there is no point but I also think the meaning is what you want it to be.

This, life is what you make of it. But I do think there are certain cases where it is unavoidable to be happy or have a "good life".

Life is whatever you make it out to be. There is no one, common goal driving the human race. We are all here for our own reasons, sometimes, those reasons do not present themselves as early as to others, if at all. Just as we came to be on this Earth, one by one, we will all meet our own demise whether or not that reason or goal was fulfilled or not.
