How can you hate this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwHpDOWhkGk) or this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S25tlrvqP_8) or.... Honestly I could go on all day. I'm what some could call a nerd but still....

I, on the other hand, can not listen to that for more than 15 seconds.

Like said above, times change.

In fact, my favorite song is Jupiter by Gustav Holtz.

I don't listen to classical music, but that doesn't mean that I hate it. I have an appreciation for all types of music, except rap or hip hop because that's not really music.

There is a difference between liking music and appreciating music. I can hate early Baroque music but still appreciate it as the first ventures into formal tonality from the modality of the Renaissance. People who can't appreciate the classical gods like Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Handel, and the others are fucking stupid and ignorant.
Bach was hand-writing a good 8 or so pages a day of ORIGINAL music EVERY FUCKING WEEK for the church he worked for in Leipzig. Mozart lived to be 35 and he composed OVER 600 FUCKING PIECES. I'd like to see you do that in 100 years, much less 35.
Sure, you can have an opinion; everyone has their own musical tastes. However, the second you say you can't appreciate that music, your "musical" opinion loses any essence of validity or intelligence that it may have previously had.

Oh, so you have the final say in what is or isn't music? Since when did you have a monopoly over such a thing? It's a form of expression using organized sound, no? Of course, there are more musical varities out there, but you can't really dismiss an entire genre.

I knew someone would quote that. Maybe I was just being a smart ass xD Rap isn't music to me, but I wouldn't deny that it is of musical interest to other people.

If you admit that it is of musical interest to others, how can you refute the musicality of it? Just because you don't like it doesn't make it any less musical.

I have quite an admiration for this kind of music. However, our nation's youth has developed the attention span of melted ice cream. Ergo, if they don't hear a bass drop, they're uninterested...

How narrow minded is that?
So all art is worthless. You don't appreciate any paintings from earlier ages. Shakespeare couldn't write?
Someone else, sorry lazy, implied classical music isn't loud enough. Jeez, go hear the Verdi Requiem. Become a cellist, sit in front of the trombones and trumpets.
How many contempory music artists do you think will be remembered in 10 years, how about 20 years, 50, 100, 250?
Bach and Mozart will be listened too and loved until the end of mankind, Lady Gaga, maybe not.

I personally need stimulation. And I think that's the thing with most of society today. Like it's been mentioned, I don't necessarily like all classical music, but I can definitely appreciate all artists who do/did whatever it is they do/did well. But yeah, I need stimulation. Couldn't listen to your links very long.

I have this feeling that Lady Gaga is going to be the lasting pop influence. She's definitely encouraged the... ehm... eccentricity trend that's popped up in the music industry. Well, pop music is always pushing that. But I mean... it's more extreme nowadays I think. I don't know about you, but I'm hoping Lady Gaga is remembered as the Madonna of this era instead of... Britney Spears. Or whoever. Her music may not be... the best, but she's a very fresh performer. I can't think of anyone else I'd like to see on that pedestal.

I can go MY WHOLE DAMN LIFE without any of it. It's just soooo freaking slow and boring and just...plain jain I guess. I prefer Oldies, heavy metal, stuff like that. The reason some people don't like it is just because it's there personal opinion and every one has different tastes and opinions.

I think the main problem is that people associate classical music with slow boring shit that blue-hairs go to concerts to, and die in between movements because it's so boring. While some classical music is like this, most is not.
Bartók's 4th String Quartet, 5th Movement. You tell me that isn't exciting.
JmkDMTU-hb4
Or Shostakovich's 5th Symphony, 4th Movement. Fucking badass as hell.

I could go on all goddamn day. Stravinsky wrote crazyass shit (Don Juan), Benjamin Britten's tone clusters are fucking orgasmic. I think people stereotype classical music, and automatically assume it's all boring shit. Which is false almost all of the time.

Narrow minded? Ha. I am just stating the truth.
When did I say art is useless?
Yes of course I like art from earlier ages.
Why do you compare Lady Gaga with composers like Mozart and Bach?
What points you are trying to make? What are you saying?
Did'nt I mention that I like contemporary classical? Sorry, but not everyone enjoys romantic literature, and the same can be said to other forms of art. Yes I do appreciate it, and I acknowledge it, and I am certain it is a course studied and taught by academics.
What I meant to say is time changes and peoples interests changes as well. I fail see the narrow-mindedness of this notion.

You're implying metal can't be very slow. In fact, my favorite form of metal is slow sludge, doom, and stoner. Also, how can you talk shit about music you don't even know anything about or listen to? That's pretty damn closed minded. You turned to the classical station for 2 minutes and because it wasn't distorted guitars with a guy screaming, "WRISTS ARE BLOODY, FUCK EVERYONE I LOVE SATAN!!!!"
I give you the speedcore of classical.

I love classical music in general......but there are some pieces I don't like just like in every other type of music. If they are in a minor key it's better because they're more pleasant to me. and And I am one of those people that really really likes Chopin's funeral march. It's a favourite. I'm listening to it right now.

I could listen to it all day as well. I especially enjoy the planets suite composed by Gustave Holst.
The main reason why it's not popular is mostly because of the pop, rap, hip-hop and r n b genres that are around these days.
The point is that classical music isn't catchy. There's no repetitive bassline that people can groove to. Only a series of what seems like random noises being played out of instrument. The main reason why pop music is so popular is because it uses the 'ear worm' tactic. This is where the funky beat of a rap song makes people want to listen to that music. It's not really because it's a good song. It's because it's catchy!

I think it's because nowadays music isn't just music. It's a whole deal with bands and merch, twitter feeds, tours, new albums etc. Nobody wears shirts with the Debussy logo on them, I haven't seen Bach on tour lately, and Mozart hasn't released a new album in forever. People nowadays need the rest of that experience.
Either that or they just have poor taste in music?

I beg to differ. I find classical music to be extremely catchy; I get symphonies stuck in my head all the time. In most tonal music, there is very often a recurring theme.

I'm not saying that it's just that it doesn't use the techniques used by 'artists' these days to make their songs likeable.

It's all based on personal preference, nothing more really. Some people like classical, others don't, very simple.

My tastes may not be a common occurrence. I love the deep bass drops of dubstep, the light wavering tones of the violin, as well as the practiced accuracy of the piano. Though I love the senselessness that I can find in many classical compositions, I can't really get physically active listening to it. I can sit down and analyze it, but it's rare to find a classical piece wherein one of the instrument's tuning or timing is off, or where the balance in instruments is askew, so it makes analyzing them boring. What that leaves me is to sit somewhere and listen to it, perhaps in the library, while reading. Dubstep and Techno songs allow me to dance and to physically emulate what I'm hearing.
My point is that people can like music for a plethora of reasons, and as such, some people may not be able to find a way to enjoy classical music. You shouldn't be upset over the way one person's psyche is composed simply because they like something you don't.

You don't need much of a mental capacity to understand that classical music is great just like any other form of music. Also there's good pop homosexual dance music out there and very good post-climatic-well written screamo out there.
I'm a late romantic and 20th century nerd. Seriously I'll shove an atonal boxset of Morton Feldman into my anus for fun on late Friday's like today. The thing is people who are strictly into classical and nothing else are no more different and pathetic than people who only like 80's hair metal and believe metal is dead now.
I respect people who can like a huge amount of different music and aren't restricted to anything. Those are the only type of humans I can really respect.
