Ok, so I decided to downgrade to Windows XP. But i have an issue, I did have a backed up ISO of the XP System installer on an ealier installation of Ubuntu but I want to recorver it for use with downgrading. anyone know of some good apps I can use to recover the file with? i'm downgrading to WIndows XP for use with running apps that Ubuntu can't run and also because my mom dosn't like ubuntu in general.

Well, when in Ubuntu, mount the partition that the XP iso is on, then use Brasero or whatever the disk burning utility for Ubuntu is to burn a CD/DVD that you can boot the XP thing from.
I can't think of any other methods.

What would your mom have against Ubuntu(or any Linux distro, for that matter)?

My mom dosn't like the way it works. but I had deleted the old partition the ISO was on and I need to recover it in order to mount it as a CD and run it that way.

Fair enough.

Once you delete a partition, the files are gone -- I thought you would know that.

actually it is possible, when a file or partition is deleted there is usually the entire file still there. Except it is in a scattered state, and unless you use something like CCleaner, those traces will remain there.

Looks like you just figured out what to do ;)

I already knew how it worked, But I need a program that can collect those bits of data and organize them into a file again. I need a program because 1. the programing studios I use don't support file retreival, and 2. I have no clue where to start on this.

(Oops, Double post.)What exactly is the current state of the hard drive? Did you delete the partition the ISO was on? Did you only delete the ISO file? Did you reformat all or part of the drive? How much has the drive been used if you've repartitioned? I don't entirely understand your question.

If you've deleted the file, but have used the drive little and the drive hasn't been repartitioned or formatted, retrieving the file is quite possible. I recall seeing a program that can recover deleted files from EXT3 filesystems before.

If the drive has been repartitioned/reformatted, things get much, much harder. While technically the data might exist on the drive, getting it back is fairly difficult without the file system.

You actually think that ISO is going to recover to it's original state? Check the MD5's I can almost guarantee it'll be different. Best of luck but I say get a new ISO.
