Hi =)

This may seem like a silly question but I really want to go swimming as I'm trying to lose weight but I have scars all over the bottom of my legs and on my thighs. Is there any way I can cover these up ? Has anyone had similar experiences with swimming ?

Any help would be appreciated.

Claire

Yes I have had this problem but mine was for PE at school so I just skipped it, end of.
Urm could you get waterproof makeup? That's the only thing coming to mind at the moment and I don't think there is much else you can do. Im sorry but when you made the decision to cut you have to make a decision as to things you can and can not do.
However when you're in the water people wont see the scars anyway so maybe just take a towel up right to the edge and get in quickly. :)

Just find a more conservative swimsuit. People don't care too much about the ones on lower legs, and if you tell them you stumbled into a rosebush or something they'll probably believe you. If you can find a suit that covers your thighs then you're set.
All the best!

I go swimming all the time. I usually wear a one piece bathing suit and shorts that go just below my knees to hide the cuts and scars on my thighs. And if i have cut recently on my arms I wear a light long sleeved shirt. I used to cut on my lower legs but I don't anymore and only have faint scars, but if you stay in the water no one sees. I am also a bit over weight so when I wear shorts and a long sleeve shirt people just think I'm uncomfeterable with myself. It's good to do things you like... Go swimming :)

On Sunday a little girl saw the scars on my legs while I was sitting on the edge of the hot tub and she asked me what happened To my legs. I told her I fell into a thorn bush and she believed me

She wasn't asking to be criticised, she was asking for advice. How is your post helpful?

Anyway...

I have that problem frequently. When I have fresh wounds on my thighs I don't swim, because of the risk of infection from the chlorine or ocean water. When my thighs are just scarred (like how they are all the time), I wear board shorts over my 1 piece costume, and a rashy (rash shirt) if I have cut on my shoulders or arms.

It is quite easy to cover it up :) If you are at the beach or an outdoor pool, say "I just don't want to get sunburnt". If you're inside, people would probably think you're insecure.

I hope that helped! PS this is my first post :D

Hey Claire

People are right to tell you that in the water they aren't visible; next time you are swimming take a look at the bottom half of peoples' bodies and you'll notice it's tough to make out any detail. You don't need to be overly self-conscious during your swim :)

I'm much less concerned about my permanent scars these days but I did used to share your fear of showing them, especially around the gym or pool or sauna etc. My advice (also mentioned by another poster above) would be to have a big towel at hand. Keep it over any bits of skin you are sensitive about until just before you get in the water and be sure to keep it close so you can wrap up as soon as you're out. You'll be surprised how little any other swimmers notice, really!

Good luck,
Rus

Yeah, I know this issue all too well (:
I wear a swimsuit and lycra shorts, the ones meant for running? They look like legit swim shorts and if anyone asks I just say I'm self conscious. I have a couple of scars on my lower legs, if this excuse can be applied to yours then milk it, cause I always just say I was a clumsy child, football, hockey [any sport involving studs] or that they're left over from childhood.
Good Luck hun (:
