I had an interview for college the other day and I got stopped in my tracks by a question that should have been easy "What motivates you". Since it was an interview and I couldnt sit there thinking forever, I made stuff up. But since then I've realized that I honestly have no idea what motivates me. When I'm not forced into doing things by my parents, it seems like everything I do is just from a gut feeling. With all of the sports ive joined, the extra work ive done for school, the vacation days ive spent coming into school to workout, many people would say that im obsessesive but I cant see myself that way.
Right now I feel like just not doing anything until I can come up with a good reason for it. Stopping letting people push me to do more work, apply to more colleges, do more interviews etc. until I can look into my heart and know exactly why I'm putting in the effort. But do you guys think that its important to know exactly what motivates you, or will I waste my time searching for it and only end up more confused?

Hey :)
I'm sure many people have been in your situation where you start to question yourself what your motivations are etc, I know I have been there on several occasions.
Also, it does sound like there is something motivting you, i mean for you to actually go into college on your days off and to complete extra work - even if your parents make you - there must be something that motivates you to get out of bed in the morning to do this.
Regarding your question, honestly, I think it is really up to you to decide if you want to find out what motivates you. And you may spend time looking for answers, but you may never find them.
However, there is no rule saying that only one thing can motivate you, i mean, even little things can keep you going throughout the day.
I hope my answer helped in some way,
Take care x

Important? maybe. Certainly not useless. I'm not sure we can ever truly understand what completely motivates in life and I doubt there is only one answer per person. It may confuse you further but in the end maybe it will help you to understand some of the ways you act and some of the things you do in life. The answer is not always as important as the journey. I think about my motivations behind my major life decisions or upcoming decisions on a regular basis. It helps clear my head of unnecessary thoughts.

well personally I think that it IS REALLY IMPORTANT to know what motivates t\you. it is important to know that what motivates you is right so the choices you make are right and you will not end up all messed up after all.
I can give an example. There's a girl who fell in love with a guy madly. This guy went to the University and just because he's there she wants to get there too. It's a bad motivation. Really. She tries to convince herself that it IS the right thing to do but it's not. Only luck can help her to get through successfully.
The right kind of motivation is your interest in something. And your talents mean a lot. When you're interested you can tell precisely why you think it's important and why you want to study it.
