View Full Version : Race card being overused?

Have you guys ever noticed how far people can play the race card now? I remember when actual racists were labeled as such, but now almost anyone can be called racist.
For an example, i recently got suspened for using the term "mexican". To be honest i don't even remember how the word was put into context, because it was so passive i didn't even think about it. I know that i wouldn't say it offensively, that's just not my personality. Anyways, the girl sitting across from me started flipping out on me for saying it.
She claimed that to classify a group of people by one race is "racist". I told her that it was for lack of a better term, as i didn't know what race the person i was talking about was, but i knew he had a mexican background, so i used the term mexican. Apparently that wasn't enough for her, and she continued to swear at me, and call me racist.
Rediculous, right? she wasn't even suspened for swearing at me.
Now to my knowledge, being racist is descriminating / being prejudice against a group of people. Whether it be black, white, hispanic, ect. For her to call me racist over what i said is just completely ignorant. If i'm going to talk about someone's background, i'm not going to waste the time saying each one of their ethnic groups, you know? If someone is vietnamese, or japenese, or somewhere near asia, i'm going to call them asian. Not because i dislike their ethnicity, simply because it would be too complicated to know everyone's background. If someone who is not from my ethnic group expects me to know their background, i expect the same from them.
Have you ever realized that people who aren't white, are able to use the term "cracker" or "white boy" whithout even thinking twice? Why can't i expect them to have the same consequence i got? And i wasn't even trying to be racist.
I think the whole race card can now be stretched waaay too far. In my school it's a big problem, and i don't see why.

I know what you mean about how it's only white's classes as racist. Today in school i was just sitting there and this boy goes I have a joke about a black man, i just let him get on with it. To be honest in my school racism isn't really delt with but i suppose if the other 20 or so "coloured people" are like me and just go along with the jokes instead of making a fuss then there shouddn't be. I thought these jokes were horrible, downright sick but don't kick up steam that will just have others breathing down your neck making life even more difficult.
I seriously don't think that was fair to you. You were just making a generalisation, not offending the person by taking a guess and maybe getting it wrong which people would say was even more racist. Yeah it is being stretched to far in some places, others just don't really care. In school there isn't much you can do about it, you just have to try and stick to the rules they put down. If you find them wrong then apart from going to the head or something you just have to try and live with it sorry to say.

I say that someones being racist as a joke, makes them shut up if they are annoying me at least :P but i never say it seriously. I don't use those terms for white people either but that might just be me, i haven't head them being used before either. Yeah i don't think the strings need to be pulled so tight when nothing bad has been said though.

I chat to Americans via a social messaging board, and I was shocked that they still used the "N" word to describe a colored person, or even "fagot" to describe a homosexual. In the UK, you can be sent to jail for using such words, but then again, we are a more tolerant society, where anti-discrimination laws has been taught in schools for decades now, to try and get rid of it.

Using "nigger," "faggot," "dyke," etc. does not make one intolerant. The only intolerance in that situation is people who get offended by a word instead of the context and intent. True intolerance is fear of a word.

People are just far too sensitive. They think everyone is out to get them. I know this will probably sound really ignorant, but I think white people are discriminated against just as much. We're seen as racist, even when the remarks we make are barely even offensive. It's if you're walking on thin glass around certain people. I'm not saying everyone of a different ethnicity pulls the race card, but it seems like a lot of people do. It's okay for them to call us racists, but we say one wrong thing and have to face the consequences.

we are a more tolerant society
You send people to jail for exercising their freedom of speech and you're more tolerant.

btw English libel laws are bullshit. You guys send people to jail because they call another person ugly.

Tolerance goes both ways. Tolerance for victims and tolerance for the idiotic trashy people judging based on race.

well, i have my views on racsisum but i cant say then here. But the thing that has really annoyed me is, i dont know if you have herd this but we're not aloud to say 'merry christmas any more but 'happy holidays' now as it is racist (ummm i dont't think so. do you?) so we are not aloud to say that in a christian country (it is coz the queen is a christian) but only muslims can go to Mecca (sorry not trying to be racist or any thing) but its true. and did you hear about the people burning poppies, would came up with to punishment!!

Yeah, i've heard of the whole merry christmas thing - and i do think it's crazy. I used to work at a grocery store, and the manager had to give us a speech around christmas time to inform us of the 'proper' way to wish someone happy holidays. All because someone who didn't celebrate was offended when a cashier wished them a merry christmas.

Exactly. And
christian country (it is coz the queen is a christian)
what the fuck why would a miserable old hag's religion determine that of the entire country's?

If you think about it classifying this person as "Hispanic" may have been more appropriate. Calling the person Mexican could be perceived a being derogatory. Honestly in today's day and age people are up in arms about racism. Between the election of the president "healing the wrongs of past generations," to the cultural outrage that would ensue if we had a "White Entertainment Channel." The name of the game is watching who you offend

Yes, I do believe that the race card is used much more often. People really...are just too sensitive now a days. It is what it is though. If I call an African person black, or a Mexican person...mexican, doesn't make me racist.

Yes if a black person called another black person a "n" word they would joke. But if a white person said it its all "you racist brah" Same with latinos.

In my school everyone is jokingly racist and nobody really cares, we're all comfortable enough with our ethnicity to not get offended by anything. Of course, outside of school, we're all uber-PC, but I agree that racism is actually present a lot less than people make it out to be. And it's only serious if people honestly believe racial stereotypes.
I'm white, but if I'm listening to Patti Smith's "Rock n Roll N***er" I should be able to say the fucking title without getting suspended.

Sure that the people who call a black person a n***** are racist. The people who get the most riled up about it are white people pointing fingers. Those people are such an annoyance that if I said that the only people who have ever tried to rob my house are black (which is true) I would be called racist. As for my town you can tell racist jokes and call people Mexican and no one cares.

I'm pretty sure in my school, saying anything moderately (or worse) derogatory to someone else earns your a 5 day out of school suspension.
Don't forget that I live in a place where the local liberals eat local conservatives and the conservatives here eat normal people.
