Jessica Ahlquist has fought a long and hard legal battle over a prayer mural in her Rhode Island school. It began when the teen claimed that it was unconstitutional and demanded it be taken down. Despite drawing hate filled threats from believers, she also gained the support of non believers around the country as well as the ACLU and won a $41,000 for her cause. She finally won and the mural was taken down. She is now helping atheists fight their causes as well. From True_Liberal

A true hero of an atheist community is the kind that would stop making a big fucking deal about not believing in God and having to recite prayers in predominantly Christian country. I find that rather ridiculous, though my opinion is probably biased because I'm a Christian. Why do religious people and atheists always have to be at war with each other? People should be able to express their beliefs, as long as they are doing so with good intentions. This includes atheists as well. In my opinion the fact that we are not allowed to have religious affiliations in school is a violation of the first amendment. People get offended way too easily, and I'm tired of America saying "Oh, this might hurt someone's feelings, better get rid of it." Why can't we just agree to disagree, and accept that there are people out there who believe differently?

No it's not. That is the first amendment. The government is not supposed to favor (affiliate with) any particular religion. Hence why prayer isn't allowed to be organized by the school, etc. If the government were to favor one religion's ideals, that would be a violation of the first amendment.

Just because religion is recognized in schools doesn't mean that the government is favoring one religion over another. When it comes to situations such as forcing kids to recite the pledge of allegiance despite the fact that it has the word God in it, I totally agree with you. But if a student came to the principal and asked to put up a Christian shrine to honor the death of a classmate or loved one or for whatever reason, they should be fully allowed to without people becoming offended and accusing the government of favoring Christianity. It would have nothing to do with the government, or the school, but with the personal beliefs of that particular student.
