French Awkwardness

Hello, Im Chris, For the past two weeks I have had a french exchange studant at my house. He and his friends at his school have a sister school program with our school. I Speak some french (Not fluent, but enough to get a point across). There has seemed to be an awkwardness between him, me, and his friends. I really want to get to know all of them, but It seems like I am Not able to.
Any suggestions of how to get rid of the awkwardness?
Please respond soon. Im having three of them over for dinner tonight.

Well to be honest you just need to try an get to know them better. Find out what they're interested in and it will give you something to talk about.
Of course it's going to be awkward if you can't always understand each other but I think you just need to try and get past that.

Thank you guys so much, It did sort of work, and today when I saw them at school they treated my like one of their close friends. I was able to find out what they like and their interests of activities.
