I hug my close friends all the time. Depending on what's become normal to us is different for every friend though. I have the typical bro hugs for some of my guy friends. Then some of my good friends who are girls I'll give a true hug to.

Normal and actually healthy I think. I'm totally in favour of expressing "affection" even if its just with friends. I'm gay but even me and my straight friends hug each other sometimes. Must admit I felt awkward about initiating a hug after I told my close friends I was gay, but then one of them hugged me and it was all cool again. It's just friendship! I mean I wouldn't force hugs but if you feel like hugging then go for it. I also have a couple of friends who aren't big on hugging, but they've got to know that that's just how I am and they're cool with it. I think hugs are awesome because you can show people that you care without it being weird or sexual or anything.
