Sets and reps both have different outcomes (strength, endurance and muscle size). I'd make sure you use them to train as much of your body as possible and stay away from isolated exercises (ones tha tonly use one or two muscles), instead do as many core muscles that can train your body extensively.
Don't overdo it or you'll go backwards.
Set yourself goals and keep pushing yourself beyond the limits.
That's all I can say really.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was always under the impression of sets being the way to increase muscle size, but that might not be correct.
I do weights at the moment, and I am doing sets as recommended by my PT - but she could be doing it for endurance and not size.
I'll ask her next session and get back to you!

Steroids. I'm just kidding, don't do that. I wouldn't know fitness if it slapped me in the face.

3-4 sets of a weight that you hit failure at about 5-7 reps will pack on size but don't use weights to heavy for you concentrate on form and feeling the full contraction in the muscle a slower negative will break down more muscle tissue than the positive part of the lift do your research, lift right and eat right and you will get there

Do between 6-10 reps for 3-4 sets in order to build and shape muscle. To gain a lot of thick muscle and strength go for only 3-6 reps and 3-4 sets.
Those are the two best options for weight training.
