View Full Version : Double+ Posts Automerged

As a member of another vB forum I found this really useful. a member cannot double/triple/etc post because when s/he does, that post(s) is automatically merged with the original one. You can tell if it's happened because it says so in the post.

if it's done to bump a thread, it's still merged but also the thread is still bumped.

the only problems are that I don't know if this is available in the version of vB VT is using (because the other vB forum I'm on is using the newer version), and I don't know if you can disable it for certain forums (because in forums like the diaries and VT arcade, this isn't needed)....

No. Bad idea. Sometimes a thread looks better if it has multiple posts. It can get confusing if you see the last post date as some time in the past, but it appears as a new(er) thread. It will get confusing, as there won't necessarily be a "last edited by __" by the post.

that's why whenever the posts are merged there's a note like 'post added'...

What about people who have journals in their diary?

It's not really that confusing. In the actual post itself, it adds a little bit around the lines of "--Edit: <date> [time]--" and then puts the double posted bit at the end of the post. This (http://www.fretsonfire.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=55615#p605255) is an example of how it works on phpBB. The effect is similar on other vB boards I've been on.

I totally support this, keeps threads nice and tidy.

What about people who have journals in their diary?

that's why in my first post I said I wasn't sure if it could be enabled in certain forums. if yes, then this feature can be disabled in diaries so people can double post.

Thanks for reading.

What about some diary threads, where it is the point to post multiple times(for example, the "my thoughts" type of thread)?

It would only be enforced on certian areas of the forums?

that's why I'm hoping it can be disabled in certain forums.

I'm bumping this.

I found the add on for this

Doublepost Prevention (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=203705)

Time Limit - if more than xxx minutes have passed since the last post, no merge is done.

Timestamp Spacer - if enabled, a timestamped spacer is added between the old post text and the new post text.

Post Timestamp Update - if enabled the newly merged post will have its post time updated to the new time, otherwise it retains the time of the original post.

Spacer Colour - allows you to set the colour of the spacer between merged posts.

Usergroup exceptions - Allows you to exempt certain usergroups from the doublepost merges.

Forum exceptions - Allows you to exempt certain forums form the doublepost merges.

This would cause problems in Diaries where people constantly double post. (i.e your Daily Journal)... It really isn't hard to report the thread and a staff member will come along and fix it.

Yes, I did read your post, but it would still cause these problems.

I know about this addon however it can cause problems if double posts need to be made, which is sometimes the case either for staff members or if you're posting a large thread that would be better organised in several posts. it's not needed. members should just not double post.

I've seen it, too, and yeah, it actually works really well.

This.

Staff members sometimes have to double post for good reasons. Such as announcements or when locking/unlocking threads.

Also like Jon said you sometimes see members who might make two posts if the thread is really big.

Then you have places like the VT Arcade and the white padded room. I know you can turn it off for certain specific forums but to be honest it is just way too much trouble for what it is worth.

If members follow the rules then their is not a problem with double posting.

Just another thought, I'm not really too sure why a double post would bother you so much, that's more of a staff member's concern, and to be honest they don't really even bother me. It takes about two seconds to merge a post, and we don't get a massive amount of them to begin with, I really just see this as pointless.
