If I were you I'd go for this. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Acer-Black-11.6-TravelMate-TM8172T-38U2G32nkk-Laptop-PC-with-Intel-Core-i3-380UM-Processor-and-Windows-7-Professional/17173562
Since you look like you want an 11.6 inch
Then for 20 dollars upgrade the ram to 4gb

They're both.. not advisable :P
I'd go with Sony for build quality, customer service and general reliability. Dad uses HP and it's trouble trouble trouble.

neither, youll regret buying such pieces of crap. save up and get something better. perhaps, 2+ ghz quad core, and atleast 4 gigs of ram.

You realise... wait, nevermind.
You should really ask him what he intends to do with it, his budget and the lifespan he expects out of it. :/

also my laptop now a year old and with ubuntu it still runs like its brand new!
Agreed. Sony is good quality and i had nothing but problems with my old hp.
The only issue i've had with my HP laptop was when I killed the fan by accident, but they didn't give me any trouble with repairing it while under warranty, HP laptops/computers work exeptionally well with Ubuntu on them.

They're both essentially the same laptops but in different cases, the specs are almost the same. I'd say; as everyone else has, to go with Sony if you would like to use your laptop for more than two + years.
I've had shoddy experience with HP. I loved my laptop, but it did eventually going COMPLETE capoop on me and and just dying.
