Make sure you're using file types that your phone can use. It may simply be that your phone doesn't recognize the file type so it doesn't show the files.

Pretty much this.
If your phone can 'see' the pictures on the SD card, but it can't see the music & videos, then it's the phone that is mentally challenged, as you call it.
Check to see that your phone supports the filetypes by going to the manufacturer's website and looking under 'specifications'.

Depends on the phone also.
Blackberrys can read and view music on the card, but for pictures you have to go to Media>Explore>SD Card
Knowing what phone you have, or atleast the operating system would greatly help.

What type of OS is it?
Android phones will scan the entire card and place anything compatible into its library, with other phones like Sony Ericsson and BlackBerry it's different.
Firstly, are the files in the correct allocated folders? Check your phone manual to see where they should be, or try downloading a file from the internet and seeing where the phone has placed them
Secondly, are the formats of the media in the correct file type? Check your music files if they are .mp3, since this is currently the most widely used audio file format and probably will work with your phone.
Maybe your SD card is corrupt. Backup all your data onto the computer and try formatting it. Your phone probably supports or is only compatible with the FAT32 file system, format it as that with a default allocation size.
Did your phone come with any computer software? How about using that? That will always work as usually the software will only allow transfer of supported file types. Or maybe your SD card isn't supported? Try taking a picture with the camera, if it saves there then it's fine. Hope this helps.

My phone excepts MP3 Files because thats what it saves the sounds from picture messages from. So i changed my files from WAV to MP3 so it would work but it still wont work
