are the apps like twitter & fb chat that aren't developed by the actual sites from app stores safe or can they access/use login details or accounts?

Probably not. Android Market allows many apps that could be illegal, such as a lot of drug apps and hacking apps. So my guess is if you're talking about an app on the app store then most likely it will be safe. But on the android market you need to be careful. If I were you I'd only go for official stuff.

"app"
That word drives me up the wall. I can't stand it.
Just fucking say it: Application. See, that wasn't so hard?

The fact that you think Apple AppStore is safe is absolutely hilarious. Anyways on topic, you should just do research. Stuff like TweetCaster is safe. I've never used it, but how do I know? A quick search. If the official apps suite your needs, stay with them.
