Try Murakami. The writing style is generally simple although somehow very involving and his book that I'm reading now, 'Kafka On The Shore', covers a wide range of themes and involves murder, 'magic adventure' (in the sense of surreal events), etc.

Inheritance Cycle is great.
The Mortal Instruments, Chronicles of Nick, The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel, Mythos Academy are all good ones with mythological elements.
If you like Dystopian (Apocalyptic, Tyranny, Weird as hell future) types try Hunger Games, Divergence, Gone Series
Vampires: House of Night, Blue Bloods, Twilight, Something about a middle school vampire I forget the name.

Lord of the Rings is a great tale.
Stephen King wrote a book called Salems Lot which is a different take on Vampires.
