Depends on how old you are. If you're still growing, don't bother with italian designer suits, its just not worth the price, not to mention all the alterations required for an off-the-rack suit. If your still keen though, it would depend on what style of suit your looking for, but generally, dolce and gabbana tends to be a little more youthful and vibrant, while gucci is more classic and subdued. For a regular two piece suit, I'd recommend a D&G (the cheaper, more youthful line by dolce and gabbana) suit - colour depending on what you need it for but try to avoid black lol if you can.

I'm going to ny and were going to the Russian Tea Room, so it has to be nice. Moneys not an object.

Expensive doesn't always mean that it looks good or is of good quality. Try going into stores and looking at suits without paying attention to the brand name, and see what you like.

True, it's just that I want to have a good brand. But it does mean its better quality. Especially cause its made in Italy.

I get a lot of my more formal/classy clothes from "budding" designers. Well, my mum has had an awkward moment once when she bought one of only two evening dresses from Gucci (Pretty sure Gucci) and on one evening formal, another lady was wearing the only other one - in the world.

I got my current tuxe-suit (almost like a tux but slightly suit-ish) from K-2 factory. Off the rack but I've led everyone to believe it was tailored. Not to mention it was (only) $180 and just about perfect :)

My dad has a suit from them, but he mostly has Hugo Boss.

Boss is BOSS. Wasn't keen to part $600 for something I could match with $180 though. Small labels, sense of genuity and rarity. Hope they become famous one day and the value of my stuff shoot up :P

Oh sorry "BOSS" ;), it'd be funny if they became designers like Ralph Lauren or D&G? You'd be hella rich then, if you have a lot from that company

Yeah if you have enough time, go for a bespoke (custom tailored) suit. Otherwise just drop by Harrods (since your in England) or individual boutiques and choose something that looks good, rather than choosing a brand, given that you're looking at designer suits. You should consider Dior Homme too, guaranteed made in Italy.

Why does it have to be of those 2? Armani or Dior.

I think that is the smartest way to go. But thats just me.

Band of Outsiders, Rag and Bone. They're so youthful and vibrant. Certainly not traditonal, however.

If you're looking for something a bit more classic, I'd head to Louis Vuitton. I'd also suggest going to Barney's (or the Barney website if you're not near one) and look through their options.

Best bets?

- Black Fleece
- Hickey Freeman

And, if you're willing to spend your money and you're thinner:

- Thom Brown

Dolce and Gabbana, but Hugo Boss has the finest suits when it comes to labels if you ask me.

Everyone is forgetting Ermenegildo Zegna. They make the best suits. They are the people who supply suits to Gucci! Go get a Zegna suit. It's going to be expensive, but wholly worth it.

Never go off the rack if you really want to rock a look. Always go custom tailored. And D&G and Gucci are both good but Ermenegildo Zegna is by far the best in the world in my opinion. They are the best weavers of the finest wools. But depending on the material you want, you could also go with Giorgio Armani (Black Label) which uses a canvas. In all honesty, Gucci actually outsources a lot if not most of their work to Zegna. And Dolce & Gobanna suits usually don't even make the lists.

Both are just fine. It would just depend on which specific suit you like better. But to be honest, you could get away with a calvin klein suit. It's all about the tailoring. If it fits you properly, any suit will look nice. Unless you tell someone you are wearing gucci, chances are no one will ever know. If you read/watch/listen to any reputable fashion stylists, they will be the first to tell you that the name isn't everything. While they don't discredit the brand names and their fashion expertise, they just say that there is no real reason to spend the money on them unless you want to. Really save the brand name stuff for accessories where the name actually gets shown off :P
