Parents super open about sex, normal?

I went to a friends house for the first time yesterday, and I was just shocked at how open he and his parents were about sex/masturbating. He had a fleshlight just sitting on his dresser (that his parents got him for his 13th birthday), and an autoblow they bought for him after he saved enough money. He told me he just writes lube on the shopping list when he needs more and his mom gets it for him when she goes grocery shopping. Does anyone else find this strange how open they are?

I mean I guess its good that they're open about certain things, but I find that very strange - maybe its just me but I certainly would never discuss that with my parents...

That's definitely a bit strange and a bit abnormal, but there's nothing particularly WRONG about it. As long as nothing inappropriate happens or as long as he doesn't get into any major trouble, I don't see why it should stop. I think I, as well as many others, would feel a bit awkward, but hey, most teen guys wouldn't argue about getting free sex toys!

me and my parents are fairly open about it to my parents dont buy me "toys" n my dad dont really talk to me about it but my mom is pretty open she found out i was having sex and told me she would buy me condoms if i needed them mainly because she knew i wouldnt stop just because she told me to so she said she would rather know i was using protection then endangering myself or my gf. not that she agrees with it but like someone else said her stand on the whole thing is teens will do what they do and she knows theres no way of stopping of it so her job as a parent then is to make sure i know the risks and i am safe as i can be. some people may say that makes my parents "bad parents" n thats fine if you want to believe that but in my opinion a bad parent would be a parent(s) that just dont want to take the time to find out if their teen child is sexually active or 1 that tries to ignore the fact hoping that their kid isnt and doesnt take the time to let their kids know the risks and ways to protect themselves. cuz lets face it once a teen does it the first time they arent going to stop just cuz their parents tell them they should or have to n lets be real theres no way your parents can stop you from doing it either unless they lock you in your room 24/7 so i think its a good parents job/duty to educate their kid and help them be safe with what they are doing.

To me, masturbation is a private activity for your enjoyment only. ( nothing wrong with a bit of experimenting) I just find this totally un natural. Opinions will vary.

I feel that openness with sexuality is beneficial, but i feel that in this in this instance, it has gotten to a point where it might be more harmful then helpful.

I think parents should be open and support independence and maturity depending on the child, but i'd find it very awkward, i guess it'd be more "normal" if he just gave them money for stuff w/ notes, it's on his bed the next day, and no one brings it up

probably just one of those families who just end up end up really open with each other, even with these kinds of things, my mom tries to get me to be open about it and is now offering to look up non-porn sites after seeing the small porn stash i had, (Why unity? WHY?!) anyways, i always just try to ignore it in a way thats not rude and go on with my business. For me it would be normal to find out one of my friends have parents like that, but it would still be awkward.
