For any and all of you petrol riders out there, what do you pump? What octane grades are available in your area? Is there a reason why you choose it over others?

I get 87 octane. Thats regular around here. I get it because its the cheapest, and there is no need to put anything more in a 14 year old Honda Accord.

In the US, generally the choices are 87, 89, or 91 octane with some places carrying 93.
I put in 89 generally because i feel my truck runs better with it but sometimes i put in 91 if the price is cheap.

The lowest octane here is 91, highest is 95.

I put 91 in, as its the cheapest.

91 costs $1.49 a litre
95 costs $1.59 a litre
with diesel sitting in the middle

We usually buy the highest there is, most place around here sell pure gasoline with no ethanol,so it's usually really expensive.

Well I always use shell fuel to get my shell points! :D

I use regular diesel now cos its cheaper than v power (dunno what the cetane is).

When I used petrol I always used the regular (95 octane) just cos it was cheaper. The v power (premium) is 98 octane but costs about 10 pence more per litre.

Supreme- 89. My car doesn't like regular anymore because of the high miles.

Ultimate, minimum 95 but preferably 98.

My dad even runs premium diesel in his Silverado as it goes through $600+ on diesel a week.

Generally in the UK, you can get unleaded fuel with either a 95 or 98 octane rating.

I normally go for the cheaper (95 octane) option which is about £1.34 ($2.10) a litre from my nearest Tesco atm.

I can't ever really justify getting the more expensive fuel - my car isn't anything particularly amazing so my engine isn't exactly high performance.

my mother only uses the cheapest kind, which is most likely what I am going to do, because we go a lot of places, and we all have lots of things to do.

Really? My Golf manages about 20% better on fuel with premium (for all I know it could be me consciously trying to save it since it's more expensive, but I kinda doubt). 91 is standard and 95 premium here, 98 is through the roof.

The savings in fuel consumption and benefits of performance in my Golf far outweigh 91, but I guess it varies between cars too. Even identical make/models.

In most cars I see no reason in putting in anything other than regular since most cars will not benefit from higher octane unless it's high power or has high compression since that's what octane does, the higher the octane, the more compression the fuel can withstand before detonating from compression. Trucks and high powered cars can benefit from higher octane but an '89 Civic won't benefit.

Use diesel all the way. good for towing our caravan. Diesel is £1.40 per litre with petrol sitting at £1.30

Diesel if I use my dad's dodge ram dually, and I use regular 87 in my small pickup.

I always use regular gasoline, no point in putting anything more expensive in.

87 regular....Gas is already expensive. Higher octane is not worth the much higher price.

I have to fill at the no ethanol race fuel station. That stupid ethanol attacks the rubber fuel lines. Costs a bit more, but its worth not having to worry about engine fires.

I'm supposed to put premium (93) so that's what I buy. Our tahoe gets 87, and my dads bmw gets 93 also

regular is all you need. i have noticed that my tank lasts longer when i put in ultimate but not worth the extra money

I noticed I get around 10% higher mileage putting in mid-grade compared to Regular. My car was designed to run on regular with premium (mid-grade) as "recommended but optional". I think that's the most important thing as to what you should pump in your car.

Australian standards say that cars must run on 91 Unleaded. It it rare to see a lower octane here.

I drive a Jaguar XJ8 with a monster V8. The engine calls for at least 91 octane to satisfy its high octane lust. Where I live its either 87, 89, or 93. The higher the octane number is, the smoother the fuel burns. Therefore, 87 octane is more violent than 110 octane. Also Lower numbers often cause pinging and detonation that can cause little holes to form on the tip of your pistons. NOT good. I choose the high octane for the Jag, and the MG 89. Some cars can not handle high octane for reason I do not understand. But honestly the octane recommended in your manual is god forbid the best stuff for your car. Only the manufacturer knows thier engines the very best, and their words of cation should be strickly followed.

Reg. 87 because the rest is just higher priced for what? 1/2 horse more?
