Passing such a bill would actually cause world wide internet havoc! What they don't realise is that they are messing with a very delicate balance in terms of legal and illegal activities on the internet! It's fine the way it is!

It probably won't be passed...

You guys really underestimate the lobbying power that the media industry has. If SOPA fails, you can bet they have a backup plan. The media corporations hate the current system, and they will do everything in their power to change it. If SOPA fails, that's not a big deal to them. They'll just try again. And again. Each time, buying out more Congressmen and making their legislation increasingly inconspicuous.

In the thread in the Daily Chronicle, I said this will be a war measured in months and years. If SOPA and PIPA fail, it's not the end of the line. The media conglomerates have been lobbying with all their might since the rise of file-sharing in the 90s, and they definitely won't stop until the circulation of information and entertainment is completely under their control.

I'll have to get better proxies and go to a library for research. Poor Wiki.

Not sure how I'd react. Even if it passes, they won't be able to keep up with getting rid of copywritten material. They can't just shut down FB, youtube and google. FB, youtube and google are bigger than the music and movie industry. They have a lot more money to spend on lobbying than the studios.

Their lobbying power is immense, but the influence of websites such as Google can't be underestimated either, imo. A website with that number of page views can have a huge influence, such as when Google blacks out its logo or Wikipedia blacks out its entire English language site. I don't know if the media industry will ever win this fight, time will tell.

You're right, the tech industry does hold a significant amount of power as well. However, it's just not as well established in Washington. The media industry has been overextending copyright law since the invention of film and music recording, decades ago. They have a lot of experience and concrete connections with Congress. Looking back over the last 20 years and examining how Congress has tried to regulate the Internet, I can hardly call them "tech-friendly".

The tech industry was fledgling up until the late 90s, and is still learning the ropes of lobbying Congress. They found an effective way, though one that can not be exercised very often, in attempting to influence public opinion as well as making the news by shutting down major websites. I'd give it time, let the tech industry mature in its ability to lobby, and see what happens.

If I was older I might go on strike against it. Otherwise I'm keeping to sighing petitions against it.

I just have reservations about how long that will take. The MPAA and RIAA are pushing harder and harder for legislation against piracy. If not SOPA and PIPA, then ACTA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-Counterfeiting_Trade_Agreement). It could be years before Silicon Valley has enough influence to completely counter Hollywood.

It might actually pass, that's the thing.

But, if it does happen, then I won't react. Things happen, and we have to adjust. Unfortunately, that's the way life is. Oh well.

First off your right it could be passed, after all we passed healthcare reform to cause the slow crumbling down of one of the best healthcare systems in the world. As dumb as that was I won't be surprised.

There's things that can be done, you don't just have to deal with it

Facebook, youtube, and other social media sites could be blocked. And nothing would stop other sites being blocked too. Each and every day we lose more and more of our rights. Freedom of speech and the press mean nothing to greedy self interested politicians.

Is that really coming as a shock to anybody?

I would be disappointed. But what could I really do? If all of silcon valley has to pitch in to fight one or two record labels, then, I can't help at all.

Honestly I would be very amused if it passes because of how much the government relies on the internet.

Off topic, but may I ask why you would say we had one of the best health care systems in the world?

I'm moving to Canada. Seriously.

Is this in direct reaction to this or just were you going to do this regardless, because I know countless people who will be moving there for a number of reasons, but I do not know anyone is in direct reaction to this.

I agree it might be years, but I think it will be this decade that they have the influence. Hollywood's influence has waned, not waxed, while Silicon Valley's influence is waxing quickly. The Chamber of Commerce is the dangerous one though, IMO.

I find it ridiculous how the government is as greedy and corrupt as their being with this. Sure, the intentions of this bill are "right", but the way it goes about will ruin the Internet as we know it.

The bills have been sidelined, so it is not an imminent threat that they will pass.

I fear the worst -- unless Google, Facebook(if they're against it), etc [-]continue bribing the senate[/-] invest in keeping this bill from passing.

If it does pass, well, there's not really much I can do. Start a new internet protocol, perhaps? :P

as SOPA is an American organisation, they have no legal action on the rest of the world so everywhere else in the world will be ok as the american based sites will change their basis of origin to else where to accommodate it but there is still a very slim chance of it even happeneing
