So we've been without the shoutbox for a while now and it seems that this forum has been a bit less active (in my view, anyway) without it. Is it possible that we can have it back or is there a problem getting it back?

Yeah, spam is an issue, but maybe put like a limit of 5 posts, or 10 or something. I really liked the shoutbox, and I really want it back. I think I speak for many people when I say that we should get it back

I am pretty sure the forum is not less active, and if it were that is almost certainly nothing to do with the shoutbox - if anything, it would be more active since people would be posting instead of using the shoutbox.

Still if members want it back should we atleast not consider it, because even though I never used it, I would like to see it return

kinda like a chat but on the index page and smaller and you can't really have conversations...

While we listen to members, VT is not an absolute democracy. At the end of the day it's not the members that have to clear up spam or are responsible for the upkeep of these features. In this case, the feature was abused and was removed for good reason.

I figured, and understand 100%.

Everyone missed the shoutbox, hell I enjoyed the shoutbox, however, there were quite a few issues in the shoutbox regarding spammers as well as full out convos, so this has to be discussed before its back. Its a good idea and all, but it is still up in the air. The shoutbox should not make or break your experience here, while theres other good features and functions on this site :)

When I looked at the shoutbox I found that, while people did sometimes hold convos in it, in general 90% of the people kept to the rules mostly and yes there was spam, but does this not happen in every chat? Also why punish the majority when its only the minority that runined it....

Exactly. There's no point in taking something away from the majority when it's the fault of a minority. I'm sure it's easy to implement bans, temporary or permanent, on the shoutbox. Why not use these?

I have an idea! Enforce shoutbox rules this time and not give out 40 warnings then bitch about it.

Sorry.

Bring a shoutbox in! And yes, put a post limit on it. Make it for more active members such as "50 posts" required.

It occurs to me that none of that is worth the effort. The main issue was that when the shoutbox was spammed, there was no ability to prune the messages as there is with posts on the forum (delete all in one go). So we had to delete every single message individually which I can tell you made my fingers very, very sore. It's a nice feature for you guys, but for mods it's just a hassle for really very little purpose. I'm not saying bringing it back won't be considered, but I'll go out on a limb and say I won't be supporting it.

In life, the minority sometimes does ruin it for the majority. That is just the way it happens sometimes. A small minority of peoples actions resulted in anti terror laws that introduced powers for police to stop and search people for virtually no reason a few years back. And you ever remember that time at elementary school when the teacher gives the whole class a detention cause Jimmy at the back of the room was talking? Chances are she was on her period, but it's the same thing: it happens sometimes. In this case it was just to take a little strain off the moderators so we could focus our efforts in other areas. If that happened to inconvenience some members, then it is unfortunate but the fact is that the shoutbox's existence inconvenienced us a lot more.

can't we use some other shoutbox that allows pruning of messages and chat permissions? I'm sure vBulletin has a lot of shoutbox/chat mods
