View Full Version : Vapidity and ignorance of the english language among american youth

I'm sick and goddam tired of seeing and hearing young people say and type amazingly dumb things. I am only fifteen, but I know how to speak and understand the language in my country. I think that it is the minor fault of the modern schooling system and the mainstream acceptance of poor speaking/comprehension/typing skills. I'm fucking sick and fucking tired of seeing people write things like, for example, cos.

What the fuck is a cos? Do you mean 'cause? Short for because? Fucking write that. It's not hard.

Another thing is your and you're. What the fuck is wrong with the people that mix these up? It's most certainly not fucking difficult to fucking understand. Holy shit. Your indicates possession. For example, this lunch box is yours. You're is a contraction for you and are. For example, You're a fucking vapid dumb fuck if you don't understand this.

The list can go on. So, my question to you is; which side are you on? Do you agree with me, to an extent? Or is this just the evolution of language? Who, or what, is to blame for this insipid nonsense?

Language (and its evolution) is essentially based upon agreement. Enough people have "agreed" that this shorthand is an acceptable way to type and communicate. It is still generally agreed upon that it is only used in an informal context. While it irks me that people choose not to spell out words in their entirety, I realize the fact that people are accepting it more and more.
Does that bother me? Yes.
Does that change shit? No.

Let people write or type the way they want to, at least in an informal setting. It's annoying when someone makes a huge-ass post in chat speak, but they tend to get ignored, so who cares. You don't have to read it. Get off your high horse and calm the fuck down.

Honestly, this should be the last thing on your agenda to worry about. There are so many other legitimate problems out there - and shorthand typing really shouldn't be one of them. If somebody wants to type using informal language, let it be. Either way does it affect any of our lives? No. Does it change anything? No.

Humans are lazy by nature, we look for shortcuts - easier ways to complete tasks. If using text type is your fancy and you think its simply easier to do, go for it. Who cares?

You think that doing it on the internet is bad? I've seen people turn in semester projects to the teacher with that kind of spelling. Needless to say, they failed the assignment, yet they wonder why.

Honestly though, it doesn't really matter. It slightly irks me too, but when I mention it, it's only a side note or casual observation.

Text type and shorthand for almost every word is a little much, but in terms of minor "its it's" or people saying "cause" it doesn't really bother me.

It's/its annoy me but nothing annoys me more than people mixing up your/you're and ESPECIALLY there/they're/their.

Every time I hear bitching about "now-a-days" I fucking roll my eyes because 9/10 its nonsense.

I think someone who cares so much about appearing intelligent should also to be able to use their grammar skills to understand what people mean when they speak/type informally. Sometimes grammar nazis bitch about a post being unreadable when it's not even that bad, it doesn't need to be perfect to be understandable, use those grammar skills of yours that you apparently care so much about.

I also think someone who expects everyone to speak and type in textbook perfect English has misunderstood the point of languages in the first place. Hell the main reason I try to type grammatically correct here is because I know it has the most impact to whomever might read my post here. If I typed all of this in text/chat type the people I'm trying to get to with this post would take it much less serious.

Which I admit is a valid reason to try be able to speak formally when need to but you also have to consider that a lot of people don't talk formally because they're not really concerned with impressing or impacting arrogant high-horse riding jerks that will dimiss them just because they can't or don't want to mimic a formal writing style.

Fuck grammar nazis.

Thank you thank you thank you, you beautiful man. This is exactly what I was thinking. Preach it brother AJ!

It's only slightly annoying when the person types a sentence that grammatically doesn't make sense, but half of the time that happens with people who can spell too. Really who cares.

cna oyu raed this? Sure you can. It's not that hard.

I honestly don't give a fuck. If a person is ignorant, or chooses to type ignorantly it's their prerogative. Nothing I say or do will change their habits. If they want to seem like a dumbfuck, so be it.

That being said, when individuals do type short hand or have terrible grammar, it isn't the end of the world. There are many other problems out there to focus on that it really feels like a waste of energy to be so angry about something like this. As long as it doesn't become prevalent in day to day life, it's no big deal.

What bothers me more is when people shorten words when speaking. Some examples include: "Toats" and "Obvi." Although at times I do get frustrated seeing this in text form as well.

Also, mainly, I'm talking about people that say these things in real life. Although, it still makes me angry online.

cos is a mathematical equation: just a short paragraph
The sine and cosine functions are periodic with a period of 2p. This implies that
sin(q) = sin(q + 2p)
cos(q) = cos(q + 2p)
or more generally,
sin(q) = sin(q + 2pk)
cos(q) = cos(q + 2pk),
where k Î integers.
The sine function is odd; therefore,
sin(-q) = -sin(q)

The cosine function is even; therefore,
cos(-q) = cos(q)
Formula:
sin(x + y) = sin(x)cos(y) + cos(x)sin(y)
It is then easily derived that
sin(x - y) = sin(x)cos(y) - cos(x)sin(y)
Or more generally,
sin(x ± y) = sin(x)cos(y) ± cos(x)sin(y)
cos(x + y) = cos(x)cos(y) - sin(x)sin(y)
It is then easily derived that
cos(x - y) = cos(x)cos(y) + sin(x)sin(y)
Or more generally,
cos(x ± y) = cos(x)cos(y) (-/+) sin(x)sin(y)

It annoys me both online and offline. Especially contractions. If you can not type/write/speak out the entire thing, then you are lazy and ignorant. And to be honest I see that kind of illiteracy mostly from the right. And no the language is not evolving, it is just the conservative teenagers that appear ignorant and illiterate spoiling the whole bunch. You know what they always say, one bad apple spoils the whole bunch. Ok that was just a paraphrase but you get my point.

Wow. This site has a mostly liberal bias and most users don't type using proper English and so on. I know you're an ultra-liberal and everything but not everything is the fault of conservatives.

I'm with AJ on this - if you're so damn almighty about your good English, use it to interpret the content of people's posts and stop bitching.

and u is the bad apple dat's spoilin hole bunch.

Really? Let us use proper English since we are indeed on a formal forum. I believe the sentence should start with And, A is capitalized as it is the first word of the sentence, U should be spelled out in the correct form, So it should be "you". Is should be replaced with "are" and the sentence should continue correctly until "dat's" which should be "that is". Instead of utilizing the gangsta language, we should put a g at the end of spoiling. We shall insert "the" between spoiling and what is supposed to be "whole" and that ends the sentence correctly with "bunch."

So let us review the sentence we just analyzed in correct form:
"And you are the bad apple that is spoiling the whole bunch."

It is much more beautiful and appropriate in that form.

Thank for attending Sentence Correction 101 with yours truly, True Liberal.

Why does everyone give such a fuck about proper English. I mean, I generally type using correct punctuation and proper grammar - but really, chill out, man. I haven't come across a post that I couldn't interpret because of the way the OP wrote it.

if i wanna type like dis wuts the big deal

I suffer from OCD, so I really can not help my Grammar Nazi-ness, but yeah I went overboard with correcting the sentence. And I was trying to have a little fun.

Anyways, the point I was trying to make is an example of the OP's point. See how mad you guys got when I corrected that sentence? It shows it is wrong to govern one's life whether it is their writing, or speech, or whom they marry, or their body. No matter what it is, it is wrong. And that is what being a liberal is about. Liberating one's self from the confines and injustices of the government. I know it is my first day here, and already I learned that this site has a high liberal bias, so we are all on speaking terms when I say all we want is true freedom, liberation. And that is the point I was trying to make, that the OP's attempt to tell how people write is just...well...stupid. (No offense OP, I am not calling you stupid, I'm saying your entire point of this thread is.)

Yeh your rite cos its irritating me 2.....

Wow it's hard to type like a 'tard! :p Seriously, if the whole post is written badly and it's difficult to read then that is annoying. But I can't see a problem with the odd word as it makes it easier to write, especailly on bloody touchscreen phones lol!!

I will admit I write things like 'cos', 'gotta' and 'dunno' just because it takes less time to write and thats actually how I'd say it anyway.....how often do you say the word 'because' when you're talking to people??

I am a bit of a grammar nazi on other forums though haha....two of the most annoying ones for me is you're/your and there/thier/they're!!
