I've gotten one standing up and laying down. I agree with Buckhunter... laying down makes me feel like I am being dominated, which I like the occasional thought of. I think it's just preference. If you're lying down, you can't see what's going, there's the element of surprise and you feel dominated.
If you're standing or sitting you can watch and feel dominating over the person doing it.

While I have never received a blowjob, I can think of two reasons why: 1) If the couple were to make a mess for whatever reason, I would say better it be on the person's bed rather than the family sofa, and 2) I imagine they sit or lay down because of the intense feeling one can get and that it wouldn't be easy to remain standing while this magical event is taking place.
