View Full Version : Don't feed Africa

Here's something else you can thank the missionaries for...
Ever wonder why there's so much poverty in Africa? And why they need so much food given to them.
Well back before the west found them Africa didn't have a very high population. a lot of the kids would die very early on 'cause of hunger, disease or something along the lines of that. They would counter that by having lots of kids. That way only the fittest would survive and make good hunters or gatherers.
Then along came missionaries with god, food and medicine. Now they have enough food to feed more mouths. Suddenly they get a population explosion, because they are still having lots of kids but more of them are surviving. They also have no idea what a condom is or does, so they can't stop having lots of kids.
Meanwhile the west keeps giving them more and more food and wonders why their own crops and cattle aren't nearly enough to fuel the skyrocketing population.
So that's another reason why I don't like missionaries (Their sex is so boring)

Several points.
1) Because of political strife.
2) Because women are raped, abused, and forcefully married.
3) Because food is grown(an arid land, come on), and there are no export and import or established businesses to stabilize the economy.
4) Because of rogue militants and extremist groups.

I think it's more to do with the fact that in return for lots of aid given to it, African countries fall further and further into debt. I don't think that voids the dire needs of people living there.

Personally, I view corruption as one of the biggest issues causing hunger in Africa. I believe that governments there care more about their own staying in power over the welfare of their citizens, and do things such as food rationing in order to keep their citizens downtrodden. Case in point: Zimbabwe.

dont let them starve but dont make it so that they are dependent on others to take care of them. but then again sometimes you have to cut off a few body parts the rest doesnt get infected...

what the actual fuck? like.. really? just because we were lucky enough to be born in countries where we can live and eat every day.. doesn't mean we should be so arrogant to assume that we are SSOOO much better them.

Thanks Lord there are missionaries. At least it's good to know that not everyone sits on a chair warming his bum without giving a flying fuck.
And one of the reasons these countries are poor and without education is that it's better for some poeple if they remain thus..... aka companies from oh-so-developed countries that buy their resources and the money goes all for them.

As opposed to missionaries who see the natives as savages who need their religion to help civilize them?

People, please. Don't take everything so literally. It's just a short thing explaining why a population explosion happened. I'm not saying stop sending food there... actually I guess the title does say that. Woops, not my intention
Also, if the US operated on survival of the fittest you'd probably be dead...I don't even live there

If someone has bad eyesight, don't give them glasses. If someone has lower-body paralysis, don't give them a wheelchair. If you get shot in a war, you don't get any aid.
Survival of the fittest, man.

Nowadays, there are not many missionaries who do that. I know because once I went with a group of other Christians to help poor children in Palermo and no one forced anything on anyone.

I would rather nondenominational help, because destroying their culture while feeding Africans is not the way to go. I'm quite against proselytizing by any religion, though.

So just because they are overpopulated they deserve to die?

Overpopulation is not Africa's problem. Not to mention Africa is a continent - not a country. They are not run under the same government and they do not have the same GDP, birth and death rates etc etc.
Look at Niger, it has a population of 15 million and suffers from an unskilled workforce, high unemployment and poverty. Nigeria on the other hand has 150 million people and is richer than Niger.
Self-insufficiency and corrupt rulers are problem, not a lack of birth control.
People in poorer countries have the mindset of children being able to work and bring back money/food for the family. They're also a source of livelihood. And many women are raped or those that are not are left to fend for themselves and their children when their partners choose to leave them.
Observe the following population structure graphs for developing and developed nations.

As you can see, as a country grows, it's birth rates slow and the older population grows because of advancement in medicine, technology and health awareness. In time, "Africa's" population will regulate itself.
What MEDCs need to do is -teach- these people how to prosper, rather than simply spoon-feeding them. Foreign Aid without education increases dependence, greed and corruption rather than independence.

Population growth in Africa exceeds productivity growth atm, leading to fall in per capita income.

I'm against destroying their culture and forcing them to convert them, as well.

How about start giving them education so that they can be productive?
I don't want to seem like a conspiracy theorist but I suspect that there are certain people in developed countries who do not want this to happen. They 'd rather have child labour and poorly-paid workers so long as they can fill their pockets.
If workers start being paid properly, the products become a little bit more expensive...in fact fair-trade products are a little bit more expensive than those which are not. And not all companies are willing to pay a little bit more money = greed.
