I would like to start by asking a question. Why isn't the name of the person who gave (or took) rep shown. If there is no reason it is not shown and it is possible, I would like to suggest that it is enabled. The whole point of negative rep is not only to warn others that a certain member isn't the best member, but also to warn the member that their doing something wrong, no? It is so annoying to have a negative rep with no explanation and no name. First of all you have no idea what you did wrong and second of all you have no way of explaining yourself to the person who gave you negative rep.

Some people sigh it and some don't. I prefer when people sign it, and personally I make sure I sigh neg rep because it seems in my eyes cowardly not to.

we're not going to do that. allowing people to see the names of rep givers would inevitably lead to retaliatory rep. if they want you to explain yourself to them, they'll sign their rep; many people do.

They make the rep anonymous so that when people neg rep someone, there isn't a big shit storm of arguments and revenge.

If we could insure that something like this would be treated in a mature manner, it would've been implemented by now, no doubt. The problem is that this is an internet forum full of hormonal teenagers. You can't really expect maturity when it comes to matters of pride in this context.

Tit for tat rep (positive or negative) isn't the point of the rep system, and that's what would happen if the names were shown.

rep is sometimes used when people disagree. it can be a complete difference of opinion issue.
