I found out the other night from my now ex that i don't have a cherry....I am seventeen and i have thought that i have been a virgin... but i guess that i am not. :( the only problem and the scary part is that i don't remember losing my virginity. so i guess my question is can you only lose your virginity only through sex?

I wouldn't trust an ex to tell me I lost my virginity, especially if I couldn't remember losing it in the first place. And no, you can't lose your virginity from anything other than sexual intercourse as this dictionary definition explains;

1vir•gin
Noun \ˈvər-jən\

A person who has not had sexual intercourse

So blowjobs, hand jobs, eaten out and the like do not make you lose your virginity, only if the penis is inserted into the vagina.

Also, tell us a little about your ex. was the break up on mutual terms? Does he hold a grudge against you? Are there any reasons why he might lie or tell the truth about such a thing?

It simply comes down to whether he's lying or telling the truth and if you trust him or not.

losing your virginity would be having a man stick his penis in you or if your gay a girl doing her thing to you.

being fingered, falling on your genitals, using tampons, and other things can cause your cherry to pop. it's not a lot of blood when a cherry is popped and typically isn't all to noticeable.

You may have just not 'popped the cherry' (broken the hymen). It's not exactly at the forefront of the vagina, and if he did not go far enough in to break it then yours has not been 'popped'. It's about four inches in, and sometimes when you have sex for the first time the male doesn't go that far deep.

I jet looked in my health book for where the hymen is as well as googling where is the hymen on med sites, and it it not 4 inches inside.... It's not inside at all... It's part of the vulva apparently... And it is actually on the forefront of the vagina

It can be torn quite easily through and some aren't even born with it

I used to think the way you do that the only way to lose my cherry was sexual intercourse with a girl. But, to many adults in the medical prfessionhave let me know that when I got sucked off at 11(yes he swallowed) my virginity was gone.

So, sorry to burst your bubble Mr 13 almost 14 If you let a guy or girl suck you off or had anul sex with a guy or girl your cherry has been popped.
On the other hand if a girl sticks a vibrator or dildo far enough inside her vagina she can pop her own cherry......So as my friends little sister says " see I don't need you" Sorry guy I couldn't resist

Sorry to burst your bubble Mr 14 I'm so much older and wiser, but you can't pop your cherry unless you're a woman/girl. A "cherry" is the hymen (skin tissue) surrounding the vaginal opening. Do you have a vagina?

You are confusing hymen and virginity. Popping a cherry is just the skin being ripped, not a loss of virginity. For guys, it's sexual intercourse. There's not a really definite way to determine if a boy has lost his virginity.

And sticking a "dildo" "far enough" won't help, as the hymen is at the opening.

Sorry guy I couldn't resist.

Losing your virginity is, in my mind, having sexual intercourse not breaking your hymen thru sports, etc. Also guys, sorry but you don't have a cherry to pop...duh

Hold on a second... You're taking him to court? What for!? Don't waste your money on lawyers and the like. Those guys are expensive!

Could you explain exactly why you're going to such trouble? And even if he's found guilty, what would it accomplish?

People, people, people. This has been discussed before.

A broken hymen on a girl (a "popped cherry") DOES NOT equal a loss of virginity. It is an ancient and antiqued measure. I can't believe that it is still being passed around. It has to stop.

As has been stated countless times, hymens can break while horseback riding, doing gymnastics or other sports. Even by a girl fingering herself.

A virgin is someone who has not engaged in sexual intercourse. In traditional heterosexual terms, a girl would be a virgin until a penis is inserted into her vagina. If that hasn't happened, she is a virgin, whether or not her hymen is intact.

You can play semantics...I have seen some girls say, "He only went in an inch and then we stopped. Am I still a virgin?" I would say no.

Then there is the issue of homosexual virginity. That's more complicated. If a girl never engages in sexual intercourse with a guy, and only has oral sex with a girl, I think it's up to her what she considers herself. To some people oral sex is different than intercourse. To others it's not.

Strangely, I would consider a girl who has only ever had oral sex with a girl a virgin. I would consider a girl and guy who have only ever had oral sex with each other virgins. I would consider two guys who have only had oral sex with each other virgins. BUT I would not consider two guys who engaged in anal sex to be virgins.

Maybe I am splitting hairs. These are just my personal views.

Bottom line: do not confuse hymen with virginity.

Just as several others have said, a broken hymen does not equal losing your virginity. If so, then there would be a lot less girls who are virgins. Losing your virginity is when you first have vaginal sex. A guy doesn't have a "cherry" but they are considered virgins until the are involved in vaginal intercourse.

The hymen isn't very thick and can break easily. They end up breaking by horseback riding, gymnastics, and even if a girl fingers or inserts an object (not a penis) into her. I'm pretty positive mine is broken but I have never had sex.

People may view what losing your virginity actually is differently. I don't think you lose it unless you have engage in vaginal sex.

Again, breaking your hymen does not equal losing your virginity.
