What do colleges think if you fail an exam but still pass the class?

What kind of exam? Like the final or mid-term? They just see what's on the transcript.

Nothing, well, if you are in the USA, here all they look at are you ACTs and/or SAT scores.

If you're talking about AP/IB exams, it's better to take the exams and fail than to not take them at all. The final exams used in our school just go towards our overall grade in the class, though.

that's not true. colleges will at the very least look at your gpa as well; some will additionally look at transcripts. if the failure doesn't significantly affect the gpa or the transcript, though, it won't matter at all.
