Cy flips his black hair, eyes squinting from the sun shining through the limp curtains in our hotel room. I rest my hand on his bare shoulder, the pale greenness almost identical, as if we were one. His eyes flash, and he turns to me, licking his lips with a quick swipe of his tongue. "Yes, I am hungry." I say, without him asking. "Remember, no killing today." I say, and he nods in agreement, eyes holding a cloudy glaze as he thinks about food. I grab his hand, and hand him his shirt. He quickly pulls it over his head, and flips his black hair, turquoise eyes gleaming under the shaggy mop. I grin, and we take off.
The streets of New York City are crowded, making it more difficult to get food. There is a lake along the coast, and we decide to hunt there at the campgrounds, where it is serene and quiet with few people, so we can eat unnoticed. We get there fast, our legs carrying us twenty times faster than a car. At the camp ground, Cy surveys our choices. There are children playing on the dock, dipping their tiny fingers into the dark green water as they lean over the rotting wood banisters. I shake my head. No children or parents today, just in case. We walk along the side of the lake, listening to the sounds of campers scurrying in their cabins. In the distance, I hear the sound of human feet crunching against forest leaves.
I nod, and Cy follows me into the forest. We make no sound as we dash through the forest, listening for the heartbeat of the humans. When we are close, I claw my way up a nearby oak tree, Cy close behind me. We watch below, eyes zooming in and out on any moving objects. Finally, they come into view. Two humans exactly-- just our luck. They sit down to rest in the tree beside ours, and we sit still to see if there are more nearby. The coast is clear. As we climb carefully down the tree, I notice the humans are carrying guns and crossbows. Hunters. They are two males in their early twenties. One is tall and buff, with tan skin and dark hair. The other is a pale redhead with light green eyes. I decide to take tall, dark, and handsome; and Cy smirks as he hears this thought, his own eyes zooming on carrot head.
On the count of three, we emerge from the underbrush. The two look up, and begin to greet us, but then all at once their friendly smiles drop to a look of utter horror. I decide to give them a try as they reach for their guns, hands shaking. I know a bullet won't kill me, much less penetrate my skin. I am right as I watch the bullet slice through the air and bounce off my chest. Shame. He would have killed me if I was human. I hear Cy let out a gruff laugh, and my teeth extend. "Only a bite." I say innocently, black irises swelling. The last thing that boy saw was the slither of my black tongue on their necks.
"We said we wouldn't kill again." Cy says, slamming his hand angrily against a tree. His victim sits weakly against a tree asleep, chest heaving up and down peacefully. "I know." I say. "I'm sorry. That boy just annoyed me. He's the kind of jerk that likes to grope. I could see his thoughts about me." I say, wiping the blood from my mouth with a spot on my shirt not drenched in blood. Suddenly, Cy is upon me, pinning me to the ground. "You're so selfish!" He screams into my face, fangs inches from my jugular. I don't fight, he is stronger than I. "A human life, Vee. I don't care if he'd raped you. You can't kill anymore." He says, eyes black as coal. I grab his arm to try to push him off, as his weight is crushing on my spine. He pins my hand back down. "I would kill you if I didn't love you so much." He says. I scoff. "You wouldn't." I say.
He pushes onto my wrist, cracking my bones cleanly. My nerves scream, but I ignore it. "Hah." I say. "You call that pain?" I say. "I've been staked before and didn't even flinch." His eyes darken. "Flinch on this." He says, pushing his weight onto my rib cage. I hear several ribs crack, one puncturing my lung. I scream, and my eyes stream. His black eyes suddenly fade, and his sweet green irises focus on me. He quickly jumps off me, and picks my head up onto his knee. "I'm sorry." He says, eyes liquidizing. I breath hard, bones burning as they try to reconstruct. I hear a crack as one snaps into place, and flinch. "You flinched." He said, face hard and serious. "You ass!" I say, somehow bursting into laughter, ignoring my burning ribcage. He gives me a crooked smile, and pulls me to my feet, kicking carrot top on our way out. He grunts in his sleep, and I laugh.
