View Full Version : What if you had to choose your gender?

I thought this would make for an interesting and entertaining discussion.
Imagine if you woke up one day faced with this:
You are about to travel back in time and age to your birth; you will restart your life from day one- only this time, you are forced to choose your gender.
I know that being a guy, my decision would obviously have some biased thought to it, but thinking logically, I'd still choose to be a guy. Guys don't have to worry about looks anywhere near to the level that girls do; this includes choosing what to wear. I hate drama and gossip, and love the concept of 'chilling' with friends. Having tons of leg hair and being able to grow out facial hair is downright awesome. No need to smell of fruity perfume; a little Old Spice is all is needed - usually just to kill the B.O. No periods, no giving birth. Have to piss? No problem! There's a tree; have fun. If it's too hot out, take the shirt off. Speaking of which, no boobs! They're a good sight, and you don't have to deal with the annoyance of having them on your chest, bouncing around and slowing you down when you want to do something athletic in the moment. Oh yeah; you can keep your hair buzzed and it would arguably improve your look. Guys are also just as artistically capable as girls.
So there; I've thoroughly defended what my choice would be.
What would yours be and what's your reasoning?
Try to think about the pros and cons of each gender before answering!

Girl, definitely! Hey, if nothing else, we get you guys to go after us just by being who we are... ;)

I think I would be a boy.
Girls have to give birth, and they get periods and stuff, and boobs can give you back problems or something, at least if they are big. On the other hand they have a lot of cool clothes (just look at Lady Gaga), we don't have that much to choose from.
The best thing would be to be able to change your gender whenever you wanted to, that would be quite fun!

Yeah... that doesn't seem to work out so well when guys such as myself try that method. The whole 'convincing stare' thing is something that I actually find attractive in girls... sucks that I'll never know what it's like to have that ability! :P

I beg to differ! Guys have plenty of options for clothes. Most just seem to choose the same baggy pants/hoodie look or some 'hipster' style. You don't have to conform! Do what you like!
On topic: It seems most are choosing to stay the same gender, myself included, which I find interesting. Is it because we already know the pros of ours, or perhaps the cons of the other are just greater?
From what I've read thus far, Guys are listing mostly physical features as reasons to stay the same (hair rules, boobs must suck), while girls like that guys will do things for them (would you carry my books for me? Thanks!)
Long post, I know, but this is fascinating!

Guy. Guys get along with other guys easily and if there is a problem it's resolved shortly = no drama
No long bathroom lines
Pee standing up
Less shaving
No makeup,
Hair cuts cheaper (maybe)
No stockings,
no one staring at my breasts
it's okay to look a little sloppy
Audible farts are more funny than embarrasing
It's okay to be a little over weight, but we do have to hit the gym
Easier to get ready in the morning
Thats of the top of my head, there are good things about being a girl too that maybe if i was a girl i wouldn't mind like they might not mind getting a longer time getting ready and looking nice. They might like to go shopping, I hate it.

I couldn't agree more. You pretty much beat me to everything I was going to remark on this thread so far! I think there's a couple other reasons why most would stay the same:
- Pride/self confidence: one's gender is a part of their identity. Not really surprising; pretty much every official form someone fills out asks their gender. Choosing the opposite gender would kind of be a betrayal to your original identity and your pride in your identity.
- Point of view: It's been scientifically proven that the male and female brains have differences in which sections are the most active. It would be an understatement to say that girls confuse me. A lot of times, girls utterly BAFFLE me. There are moments where I come to question a girl's basic logic (not thinking she's stupid though, haha!) The same probably goes for them. Wouldn't it be an unsettling idea that your personality, thoughts, and emotions will now become unfamiliar? This might be a reason. Also, doesn't the idea of being attracted to what your gender formerly was seem kind of... strange (to put it mildly)?
Yeah, while a lot of physical advantages for guys have been listed, don't forget about other things. While girls have to deal with boobs, they will never know what a kick to the balls feels like (something that will inevitably happen to every guy at some point). Also, while guys get to go shirtless, there's a reason why a good deal of us, including myself prefer wearing swim trunks rather than speedos. Wedgies also suck. Unwanted boners do too. Especially when a fancied girl is nearby. So basically, having 'junk' does not always equal happiness. Still, I think girls have more physical 'cons'.
Also, while girls may enjoy how guys treat them in a 'gentlemanly' way according to general 'rules' of socializing, I must point something out. Stepping ahead and getting the door/holding the door for a girl gives me such a great feeling. Don't ask me why; I can't explain it. All I know is that is feels rewarding-even more so when the girl acts slightly surprised and then smiles and thanks me. This is especially awesome before a movie for some reason; I don't know why.
I agree that this discussion is "fascinating". A similar but less in-depth conversation actually gave me the idea for this thread, and it's actually turning out to be more interesting than I originally thought. :)

I used to both pray and dream about this very subject alot thinking if I were a girl everything I do with a guy would be Ok.....I would most likely be labled a slut....but it would be str8 sex and be Ok.
But, every morning I would wake up to my old buddy woodie. So, I guess I got used to the idea of being a guy.....GAY.....but still a guy

Okay, to be totally honest, I am torn between the two....First off I wan tot know how many guys that chose to stay dudes are straight, I mean, i am probably sure most of them are, just saying. As for my answer I am torn and here is why.
If I were to be a girl, I can deal with the cramps, I have a conditions hat I get huge gastrointestinal cramps that i get prescribed some of the same things ladies get for theirs, I mean, come one, you can deal with this with the right meds, as for the bleeding, such a turn off, I mean, who wants that shit?!?
Also, i have a feeling I can, no, I KNOW I can walk in heels better than most of the girls around here (I had to play Mrs. Turnblad when I was in Hairspray, I wore the heels and danced for almost 4 hours a day, try my bitches, I have the scares to prove it, I did all the dances and had to teach them to the others.) Also the clothes, so fun, I mean, my sister has so much to chose from, I mean, i could be cute and sassy all the time and no one would say anything, not to mention I have a better figure than a lot of the girls do where I live, please, learn how to match your shoes to your belt or your top, I mean, how freaking hard is that?!?
being a guy, you can not wear whatever you like, but I mean, skinny jeans, not for m, I have a little too much that hurts when I tried on a pair, ohhh thee agony....the pain, I was like, almost cut in half.... I can go with the V shaped body, I have it, and yes, us uys, if you are man enough there are plenty of things to wear. Tray a nice low cut vest with a nice, slightly smaller button down shirt and a pair of nice shoes, then you rock the ADIDAS shell tops. I mean, not that hard, again....Look at the adds, there are plenty of ideas there.
Again, I am torn...

Honestly not trying to sound weird here but being honest Id do it as a girl as I've been through it all as a guy so I wonder what it would've been like going through it all as a girl and how I would've some things differently

I'd stick with being a guy any day of the week. Any way you ask this question, you will get all sorts of bias in your responses. The only reason I would want to be a woman for a day is to experience what sex feels like as the opposite gender.
I'd stick with being a guy but I'm not looking forward to prostate exams.
Prostate exams really are no problem. It's quick and painless. Just remember to make your doctor promise he'll call you in the morning.

Okay, I guess I'm going to be the first to say that I'd choose the gender I'm not.
I'm a girl, and I guess I'm okay with it, but let's face it: for the most part, guys have it easier. I'm not saying that they get to just fly by in life, but as a whole I do believe being a guy, at least physically and socially, is a hell of a lot more simpler.
I'm gay, so I'd technically be straight if I switched genders. That would probably make my life a lot easier, but I find that I enjoy lesbians more than I enjoy straight girls.
I don't want to have to deal with my period, I doubt I'll ever give birth so it's not really needed in the first place. I think having facial hair would be awesome, and I like happy trails. I don't like make-up, I'm a tomboy, and it would just probably be better for me to be a guy.
That being said, I'd have to also get the mentality of a guy. I wouldn't want to be stuck in their body and still think the way I do now. Mentally I'm a girl, and I'm cool with that.
