Asking someone out is starting a relationship where you are exclusively boyfriend and girlfriend. For different ages that means different things. In Middle School, it just means saying you're bf and gf, not usually anything more. High school, then it means sometimes going on dates out to movies, going to the beach, hiking, dinner, etc. Later on life, say college on, going out is trying to find someone to marry, generally.

To ask someone out does NOT mean you're asking them to be your bf/gf. You are NOT "exclusive" just because someone asks you on a date.

Asking someone out is asking someone on a date. It means you are interested in them and would like to get to know them better.
