for christmas my uncle, who is a big hunter, sent me a nice pocket knife. feeling.. overconfident, i decided to trust myself with. but now, these past three days have been extremely stressful, and i find myself wanting it more and more. i'm worried about this getting worse

Ask someone to hold onto the knife for you until you get yourself under control.

I'm sure you can do it :)!

I've had this problem. I have a knife collection (How cliche.) and every new knife I promise myself I won't use. Here's an idea:
Hide it, or ask one of your family members/friends to put it somewhere that is safe so you don't "lose it" but simply do not pay attention to where they are putting it.
Put it somewhere for show. Place it on a wall, or in a show box (I have a few pocket knives on display) so that it won't be that tempting to take down or mess with.
Remind yourself that this is a gift and you do not want to destroy the dignity of such a gift by using it to tear up your own flesh. This is something I had to do with a pocket knife that one of my boyfriends had given me.

Most important of all: Remember that you are a strong individual. You don't have to give into temptation!

i might try to hide it somewhere. it's just frustrating that i've been doin so well, making it months without an issue, but a piece of metal sends me right back into a 3 day struggle

That is why you have to remind yourself that you are strong. You've made it that long, you are obviously a very very strong person. Keep it up and I have no doubt that you will not fail!

made it through the night without a scratch. it was difficult as hell, but is much easier to deal with now. i'm looking forwards and aiming for a goal of 1 year free. thanks for the help. :)

Well done, good you feel more confident.
Another idea is to put the knife in a box and wrap the box up with sticky tape and if you feel like you wanna use it then you have to tear the wrapping open which will take a long time and by the time you've opened it you would of taken your strength and anger out on opening it so you won't need to use it.
Hopefully it won't get to that point, but I only suggested it just in case. You have made a really good goal, keep it up! x
