I've got an iPod touch, I've had it a year.
However recently the home button has stopped working, I thought it was just a bit desensitized at first so just pressed harder, then only one side seemed to work, and now it barely works at all. Sometimes I just turn it off and on to switch what i'm doing.

Can it be fixed if I took it to an iPod/iPhone repair place? And relative cost?
Or do I just need a new one? :/

It can be fixed and the price varies wildly depending on where you get it fixed (Apple Store - Chinese place ) Or of course you could DIY and buy the parts online.

Does it click, or just not respond?

If you take it to an Apple Store and it's still under warranty, 4 times out of 7 they'll replace it for you. Of course those aren't the exact odds, but you get my point.

I'm not sure it ever clicked, but yeah just doesn't respond.

And I'm not sure it is still in warranty, i've had it a year..

The default AppleCare warrant ends after a year, so unless it was bought with extended you'd have to pay for it.
I'm still looking into if this can be fixed without bringing it to Apple.

I had to have my home button fixed back in September when I took it in for jack repair, they didn't charge me any extra for it because it was easily done but if you search online for a computer shop near you and see if they do iPod repairs like mine does or just shop around. It shouldn't cost any more than £20 so if they ask for more find someone else. It can be fixed by places you've just got to look around a bit first?

Better still if you still have your warranty phone up apple customer services and find out whether its worth having it sent off. If not see how much it'd cost.

If it runs iOS 5, you are IN LUCK.

You can use assistive touch to simulate a press of a home button.

It's in settings under general, I think.

The menu lets you press the home button, aswell as use gestures. It's really good. I reccommend you try it, really.

It can open in any app.

Wish you luck :)

You can easily find a bezel (home button) for your ipod on Amazon for cheap; I'd say around 5 bucks. You might want to get the digitizer (screen) and bezel (home button) together because it might be more difficult for you to put the bezel in yourself; if it's attached to the screen, all you have to do is remove the current screen and replace it with the new product. Both together would probably cost you around 10 bucks. Usually they come with the tools to remove your current screen & home button too.

Just check out some YouTube vids if you aren't sure how to remove the screen/home button.
