a moderator is one who can delete, edit, lock, etc in certain areas, for example.. help section, The Psychiatric Ward, etc.
global mods are like moderators, except they can moderate in every section.
admins can do things like change the names of forums, sections, and read your pm's. so watch out :)

Moderators are sectional. They are either for General Discussions or the Help Forums. You can guess which bases they cover. They deal with post reports, visitor messages and issues in their member forums. Moderators may be picked or there may be applications among members to become one - members are never directly promoted to global moderator or administrator positions.
Global Moderators are more senior moderators, and they cover all sections. They are there to assist moderators in their duties and to ensure that everything runs smoothly on the site. They form the lower echelon of the senior staff.
Administrators are the big boys. They have ultimate power on the site and control all of the sites features and options from the back end. They form the upper echelon of the senior staff.
All of the staff are here to help and shouldn't be viewed from just a moderation perspective though... we're also here if you need someone to talk to or if you need some help with using the site in general!

Something nobody covered yet...
You don't ask to become a moderator. They will post in the VT volunteer job opening forum if they need anyone, or rarely, contact a member by PM asking.
Don't ask to become one, that's frowned upon though ;)
