I will be getting a new laptop in a month or two, but I can't decide which one.

I'm not a big fan of windows so its either a Macbook, or getting a Ubuntu laptop.

I just wanted some alternate viewpoints and experiences. I'm also quite tech savvy and I have a Mac Pro as my main computer, I have a little bit of experience in Linux and I am willing to learn more. So please, what do you think; MacBook or Ubuntu and why?

Something with Windows XP Pro, or Vista. Macs are crap. Enough said. Sorry if that wasn't the answer you were looking for . . .

Dumbass how about you try to be helpful.

Macs are more for editing and work. It all depends on what you do. Tell us more about what you'll use it for.

What are you going to use it for and how much are you willing to spend on it?

Yeah because Macs are like some of the most expensive ones out there.

From personal experience I wouldn't recommend a Dell because I have always found them to be poorly made, but thats just my experience. Maybe I just ordered a shitty one.

I do a lot of internet browsing, I have a lot of music and movies as well, Nothing to big deal. Right now I'm leaning to the Macbook, just because Macs have a lot of art programs, and Linux is more Techy then I would like to be. Also, my limit is like 1,200 dollars (the base Macbook).

You would be better off getting a more powerful windows/linux based laptop than a less powerful mac laptop.

So if you get a windows based laptop, you can download and put linux on it.

For what you'd use it for a single-core Turion-based notebook would do just fine. I'm assuming you mean watching movies, not editing. Go for about a gig of ram if you go with that processor (I'm guessing your model will be at least 2 GHz). If you need to store a lot of music and movies on the hard drive go for around 120 gigs. A decent sound card would be worth the money, along with a good pair of headphones. Go for a large widescreen for the movies. If you plan on using it at a desk more than on-the-go I suggest good speakers and a USB mouse rather than good headphones; both if ya like. On that budget those nice accessories will be easily affordable.

I agree, although most laptops come with Vista now, so if you can afford it 2gb RAM and Dual core is good, even for general use i've seen a huge difference.

Thanks for all the help, Dell just released a laptop that comes pre-loaded with Ubuntu on it, which seems nice. I think I'll go for that, the only way I might get a Macbook is because my Dad can get a discount on them because the company he works for has some membership or union or something. But as of right now I'm getting the Ubuntu laptop because its still about 300 dollars cheaper.

Thanks for all your help it is much appreciated!!!

A little note about 32- vs 64-bit. A 64-bit processor handles twice as much data every clock, but ONLY while running 64-bit software. So if your only 64-bit software is your OS you won't see much benefit. Future programs will utilize this more, but as of right now it doesn't matter very much. All AMD dual-core processors are 64-bit, as are all Intel Core 2 Duos. The Core Duo line is 32. Core Duos are comparable to Turion X2's. AMD cannot currently match a Core 2 Duo, but their prices are lower.
