North Korean leader Kim Jong-il has died at the age of 69, state-run television has announced.

His death was announced in an emotional statement read out on national television.

The announcer, wearing black, said he had died on Saturday of physical and mental over-work.

The BBC's Lucy Williamson in Seoul says his death will cause huge shock waves across North Korea.

Kim Jong-il has been the leader of the impoverished communist country since the death of his father Kim Il-sung in 1994.

He suffered a stroke in 2008 and was absent from public view for several months.

His designated successor is believed to be his third son, Kim Jong-woon, who is thought to be in his late 20s.

Rereading that article, what's amazing to me is they kept it quiet for over 24 hours after he died. They really are geniuses at keeping information from spreading.

At first I thought that this would benefit N. Korea but then I remembered that his son would take over :P Oh well.

Exactly! Now that Lil' Kim is gone, his son will take over and I heard he's worse than his father. So much for any shot for N. Korea. His son probably will be more hardcore and willing to use the nukes to flex N. Korea's muscle.

You are "glad"?

Number one, you don't talk bad things after a dead man.
Number two, come now, he is the most charismatic dictator ever ( after my lovely Gaddafi of course )
Number three, without him east will be boring.

I don't envision that much of a change will take place. The son will be under pressure to tow the line. Even if the son were to have a total ideological flip to the fathers stance he wouldn't be able to simply walk in and create a "new atmosphere" in a country that has been ruled and regulated the way N. Korea has been for years upon years.

Pfft, I'll talk shit about dead men all I want. Fuck Hitler and Stalin.

Also, I would argue that he isn't really the most charismatic dictator ever. You forget Hitler, Stalin, etc.

Plus, it's time for some fresh blood. A younger version of Jong-Il will be fun!

Will it really make that much of a differance?
I don't know... but the future will answer that question well, i am sure.
For better, For worse.

We shall see.

What gets me is the national "mourning" with everyone out on the street crying their hearts out. Even the bloody news reporters were crying. I mean, even if the queen died, people wouldn't do that.....

I suppose you are right. I heard that only Kim-Jong-Il / Kim-Jong-Un supporters were allowed to line the route of the funeral corteige

It's because they have guns pointed at them.

Actually it's far more complex than that.

These people have been brainwashed from birth to believe that everything good in their lives is because of their 'dear leader,' and in their eyes, these dictators are gods. Every media outlet is controlled by the government, which constantly feeds the people propaganda. They haven't a clue what's happening in the outside world; they're not allowed to see that. They don't even realize how terrible their situation is. They see their walls decorated with paintings of their dictators, they hear propaganda over the radio non-stop every day, and if they're one of the more wealthy, fortunate ones, they get to see it all on tv too. The concept of these dictators doing anything wrong does not exist in most of their eyes. They worship their oppressors.

Now I'm not saying fear plays no part in this; if the people complain about anything or show the slightest dissent, they and every one of their relatives would be carted off to work camps where they'd wither away and die. But that was a more powerful factor in the early generations, before the people were completely brainwashed. This generation, under Kin Jong-il, grew up hearing people sing their leader's praises, bowing to the paintings of their leaders every day, and constantly giving thanks to them for the most minor, ridiculous things. Half of those people crying over Kin Jong-il's death are truly grieving.
