I cannot imagine losing a close friend. I do however have experience in loss of someone close. My dad died when I was only 14 years old. Death of anyone is so hard to understand. Is there anyone you can talk to? Friends or family? It may sound ridiculous to you, but my faith got me through. Next time you're feeling very sad and alone, try praying. It gives a surprising amount of comfort. You never will fully understand why it happened, and you will never forget that it happened. But eventually you will be able to accept it, I promise. Just give it time. Talk about it. Pray about it.

Ok again I've not lost a friend, but I lost a close family member, my uncle 14 months ago.
As cliche as it sounds time helps, it doesn't stop hurting but you can get used to the hurt. Like yourself I'm athiest, I don't and wouldn't pray. But I write letters, when I have something I'd like to tell him I write to him. I burn the letters but you could do anything with them. I also find going to the crematorium where his ashes are scattered helps me.
Is there anything you shared with your cousin that might help you feel close to him?
I shared certain music with my uncle and have albums I listen to to help me feel close to him when I need it.
And again another cliche talk about it. If you're angry about it don't be afraid to rant to someone who will listen, if you miss him talk about him, if something reminds you of him say so. Bringing him up in conversation could help you learn to cope. You won't move on as such, you'll just learn to cope with it day to day.
I know personally I find his birthday and annivesary of his death hard of there are days you find difficult try to keep busy spend it with family or those you are comfortable with.
I know it's hard to lose someone before they're time but you have to somehow learn to deal with the pain and carry on. If you need to talk contact me, I'd be happy to help.
