I Date Idiots...

I date jerks who couldn't care less about me. They "care" but it's like I don't matter. They'd rather talk about themselves all the time and forget about me than anything.

Worst part is, I can't bring myself to break up with them. I convince myself it's worth it, even when I know I could get someone better.

Any advice, dear VT citizens?

I'd say flat out tell them, and if they don't react with a positive change then go straight up and say "It's over" or something along those lines. Forcing yourself to say things can't be easily advised, you just have to do it.

The end result is going to be the same, no matter how you phrase it. What will invoke a better response though, is using tact.

Coming out of your room in a Wilfred costume and saying this is the new you is probably not the best way to do it. However, going to your dad during a normal conversation and talking about it might be more tactful, but even scarier.

Suck up the fear and drive on. It is normal to be scared at times. It is courage that drives us through it.

I know this is slightly off dating, but it gets the same point across. Be direct and say it.

Oh, I do say it. As a matter of fact, I just recently got off the phone with my boyfriend after having told him so. He knows it. I know it. He admits it. He knows he's a jerk, and he does it purposely. But I still take it. For no apparent reason.

In that case all I can tell you is that it seems like if you really don't want to keep dating him you'll just have to tell him you're breaking up. Not really option outside of that that I can see.
