How do I get into the friend zone?

There's this guy that some of my friends were trying to set me up with. I kept telling them not to, because I didn't really know much about him. Well these friends are friends with him, and they do know him. They talk to me about him so much, that I've started to like him. I'm not the kind of girl to go straight into a relationship without being friends first, so I kind of need to be in the friend zone. One of these friends has graduated and I don't see her, the other, it's just kind of awkward with her because she's the only one that knows I like him. I feel like I should try to be his friend without her help, but I don't know. He's the shy type, well so am I, but I don't think he will make the first move. How do I get into the friend zone?

Guys dont like the friend zone. It's a bad thing.
Perhaps... Rather than "Friend Zoning" this guy, you just "be friends".
It doesn't need to be hard. Be nice to him, he'll be nice to you.
