Is it in style to wear blue jeans to the beach? I don't own a pair of shorts, and I'm going with some friends to Hawaii.

There was a thread about this not so long ago in which someone was complaining that they were insulted for wearing jeans to the beach. As a result of that thread it would seem that it's not a common thing to do. You're better off wearing shorts or some sort of swimwear.

It's fine. What island are you going to? When I lived on O'ahu , the tourists would wear jeans, and it was no big deal.

i think it would look weird, but it doesnt matter a lot of people in california go to the beach in jeans, the beaches were i live are like super cold cloudy beaches so yeah it doesnt seem as out of place, but i think you'll be fine either way

If you come to Hawaii, please do not wear jeans on the beach, especially if you come to Oahu and go to waikiki beach. You will most likely get treated like a piece of trash from the locals because if you go to the beach, at least respect it and wear proper clothes. And if you are at waikiki, just walk across the street and go into one of the many surf shops that sell surf shorts, problem solved.

How is wearing jeans disrespectful? If you ask me, skimpy bikinis are a lot more disrespectful than pants.

Trust me, if you come to hawaii, especially oahu, you will definitely think twice about wearing jeans to the beach. Here, it's almost like a common understanding that if you go to the beach, you should at least wear the proper clothes for going. The only exception to it would be if you stay in the parking lot or are by picnic benches that are not on the sand. You probably might not understand this, but it's just something that all of us grew up with as general knowledge stuff, just respecting our land and beaches.

I think it's fairly obvious that clothing and values of respect, or lack thereof, are based entirely on cultural factors. For example I live in the UK and it's not a ridiculously unacceptable thing to do because it's bloody freezing a lot of the time. Plus you've got the people that will wear jeans literally anywhere...
